Discover Tarragona: Roman heritage, monasteries and nature
Accommodation in Tarragona
Roman history, monastic culture, Modernist architecture and expansive landscapes offer several possible focuses for a trip to Tarragona. The Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco, Santes Creus, Escaladei, the Coves de l’Espluga de Francolà and the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre each represent a distinct theme. When planning, it helps to decide whether you want to focus mainly on cultural sites, architecture or nature. You can also tailor your hotel search to your travel interests.
Roman heritage and monastic history
The Archaeological Ensemble of Tarraco was added to the World Heritage List in 2000. Tarraco was the first and oldest Roman settlement on the Iberian Peninsula. Together, these facts give Roman heritage a clear historical reference point. The monastic sites offer a different focus: they tell the story of monastic domains, religious architecture and the continuity of communal life.
Santes Creus was founded in 1160 and remained the centre of one of the most extensive and influential monastic domains of the Crown of Aragon until 1835. Two royal tomb monuments are considered important works of early Catalan Gothic art and the only royal tombs of the Crown of Aragon to have survived intact. Here, the history of an important monastic centre meets a distinctive theme in funerary art. Santes Creus offers guided tours for individual visitors and the general public; check the schedule before your trip.
The Charterhouse of Escaladei lies at the bottom of a valley sheltered by the Montsant mountain range. It was the first charterhouse on the Iberian Peninsula and influenced the founding of many later charterhouses. The restored area where the community lived is open to visitors. Escaladei also offers guided tours for individual visitors and the general public. Check the latest visitor information in advance, as access arrangements may change.
Another point of comparison is Poblet on the Cistercian Route. It is the largest monastery on this route and the only one of its two male monasteries to preserve a monastic community. This shows that monastic history is reflected not only in historic buildings, but also in the continuity of a community.
Modernist architecture and caves
The Celler Modernista de l’Espluga de Francolà adds an example of Modernist industrial architecture to the historic monasteries. Built in 1913, the cooperative winery is notable for its parabolic brick arches and its architectural and historical value. During a visit, you can see the cellar and the main halls and learn how a bottling plant works. This allows you to consider the building’s form alongside its former use. Since booking arrangements may change, check the latest visitor conditions before planning your visit.
The Coves de l’Espluga de FrancolĂ contain a Palaeolithic sanctuary with more than 300 engravings dating back approximately 36,000 years. A total of 3,590 metres of passageways have been mapped beneath the centre of l’Espluga de FrancolĂ. The adventure route offers a different kind of visit: two cave guides accompany participants, equipped with protective gear, to the large Sala de la Biela. Reservations and opening hours may change; check them before planning your visit.
Wetlands and summit views
The Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre covers 7,736 hectares in the Baix Ebre and Montsià comarques. Large areas of the delta are used for rice cultivation. A visitor route leads to a viewing tower overlooking Buda Island, rice fields, salt marshes, ponds and lagoons, as well as the wetlands of L’Alfacada. The viewpoint brings together several of the delta’s landscape types in one panorama.
Another landscape landmark is Caro, at 1,441 metres the highest peak in the Els Ports massif, the Terres de l’Ebre and Tarragona Province. It can be reached by vehicle or on foot via the signposted trail from the Esquirol car park. Check road and trail conditions locally. The two destinations differ considerably for trip planning: the stated destination on the delta route is the viewing tower, while Caro centres on a named summit and two specified ways of reaching it.
