Caseres lies in a valley surrounded by mountains, beside the Algars River. Its townscape combines historic buildings and archaeological remains with a riverside route, art along the way and festivals at different times of year. Anyone looking for a hotel in Caseres can plan their stay around a particular focus: heritage, nature and riverside experiences, or local festival culture. The differences below make it easier to choose when to visit and what to focus on.

Buildings and archaeological layers

The parish church of Santa Maria Magdalena is built of dressed stone and has a round-arched portal. It appears to be a mid-16th-century building in the Gothic tradition. Fort de Milet is part of the defensive line along the Algars, built by the Generalitat in 1937 to hold back the expected offensive from AragĂłn. The complex includes an air-raid shelter, galleries for artillery guns, trenches and a water tank.

Castell d’Almudèfer is a partly ruined 12th-century Templar castle. It stands on two terraces on a hill above the Algars; the remains include a square tower, a section of wall and a cistern cut into the rock. La Gessera is a protohistoric archaeological site on a steep hill about 415 metres high above the Algars, on the present-day border between Terra Alta and the Aragonese comarca of Matarranya. The site has been restored. Archaeological research distinguishes two phases of occupation: from the late 7th to the middle of the 6th century BC, and from the middle of the 6th to the late 5th century BC.

Riverside route, art and bathing spot

Remains of the former cooperative mill, including millstones, can be seen on Passeig de la font. Along the path by the Algars River near Caseres, you can also see various sculptures from the Art al Ras project. These are two distinct cultural traces in different settings: the mill remains on a named passeig, and the sculptures along the riverside path.

The Ruta del riu Algars is 33.31 km long; it takes about 2 hours and 30 minutes and has a difficulty rating of 4/10. As the duration is approximate and route conditions matter, take the path conditions into account when planning. Another riverside perspective can be found at the bathing spot on the Algars closest to the town, which resembles a small cove. At Fels dels Aubens, you can jump into the water, provided it is deep enough.

Festivals at different times of year

The Fira del Tocino is an all-day festival in the old town. Its programme combines a market for pork products with a craft market, wine and vermouth tastings, suckling pig cooked on site and a demonstration of sausage-making. If you are travelling for the Fira, check the dates in advance.

Caseres’ main festival takes place on the third weekend of August, the weekend closest to 20 August. It lasts four days, from Friday to Monday, and honours Sant Gil, Sant Raimon de Penyafort and Sant Roc; the programme includes religious, entertainment and sporting events. The Santa Magdalena festival, in honour of the patron saint, is held on the weekend closest to 22 July. It includes a communal sardine meal at the summer festival venue on the Algars, followed by dancing.

Sant Antoni is celebrated on the weekend closest to 17 January. Large bonfires in the streets and communal dinners outdoors are part of the festivities. These three occasions therefore fall at clearly different times of year: Sant Antoni in January, Santa Magdalena in July and the main festival in August.
