Flix: Nature and Cultural Heritage on the Ebro
Accommodation in Flix
Nature and cultural heritage around Flix
A trip to Flix can be planned around two main themes: nature on the Ebro and cultural heritage. When looking for a hotel in Flix, you can first consider whether nature watching and trails, or historic sites and guided tours, should shape your stay. The Pas de barca de Flix adds one of the last remaining ferry crossings on the Ebro to your plans. The crossing also provides access to a viewpoint overlooking the meander.
Nature in the Reserva Natural de Sebes
The Reserva Natural de Sebes covers more than 250 hectares of protected habitats. Its landscape is a mosaic of wetlands, riverside forests and river islands in the heart of the Ebro. These habitats are home to birds, mammals, reptiles, fish and distinctive plants. Options include walking or cycling trails, birdwatching from observation points, scheduled activities, family programs and volunteering through the environmental volunteer service. When planning, it makes a difference whether you mainly want to cover a route, watch birds or take part in a scheduled activity.
The main trail in the Reserva Natural de Sebes is about 3.5 kilometres long and runs from Mas del Director to Mirador de les Illes in the Riba-roja d’Ebre meander. This gives the trail both an approximate length and named endpoints. If you want a specific route to shape your nature outing, this trail offers a concrete guide; observation and scheduled activities are other options.
The central part of the Flix meander is designated as a Reserva Natural de Fauna Salvatge. A viewpoint at the highest section of the road surrounding the meander can be reached from the C-233, the road to Bovera, from kilometre 1, or via the ferry crossing. This gives you two specified access routes to consider for reaching the viewpoint.
Cultural heritage and history
The Refugi Antiaeri de Flix was restored and converted into a museum in 2008. Guided tours of Flix’s cultural heritage must be booked at least 48 hours in advance. Check this requirement again before your trip.
Castell Nou was built in 1874 on the highest hill of the meander to protect the centuries-old upper ferry crossing. Its location, construction date and protective function link the fortress to the history of crossing the river. The archaeological site of Sebes offers a different perspective on the past: it comprises three settlement areas. On the highest part of the hill is an Early Iron Age settlement; there is also a necropolis from the same period and an Iberian settlement dating from the second half of the 6th and the 5th century BC.
The Centre d'Interpretació del Camà de Sirga in Flix preserves the memory of the Sirgadors and Llaguters, who hauled Llaguts and their cargo upstream along the Ebro using tow ropes. The Centre also includes a nature classroom. Students can take part in activities on historical and natural heritage, research projects and environmental workshops there. The Colònia Industrial next to the Flix factory adds another dimension: its architecture and urban planning are strongly influenced by German styles.
Ferry crossing and viewpoint
The Pas de barca de Flix ferry service is free. It uses two larger Llaguts, the Democrà cia and the Mare de Déu de l’Assumpció; several vehicles and pedestrians can be carried at the same time. If you plan to include the crossing in your itinerary, check the ferry service again before your trip. Together with the stated access routes to the viewpoint, the ferry provides a concrete reference point for planning an outing around the meander.
