Reus: Culture, Modernisme and Hotels
Accommodation in Reus
When looking for a hotel in Reus, culture and architectural history can help shape the themes of your stay. Reus offers a range of points of interest, from Modernisme and GaudĂ’s life to religious traditions and the history of wine and vermouth. Each place has its own focus: some introduce you to architecture, others link buildings to historical stories or showcase the city’s wine heritage.
Experience GaudĂ and Modernisme
The GaudĂ Centre Reus focuses on the life and work of architect Antoni GaudĂ. It presents the principles of GaudĂ’s architecture and Modernisme in an interactive format. The exhibition covers 1,200 m². The Ruta GaudĂ offers a different perspective: it takes you to places associated with GaudĂ’s childhood. This clearly distinguishes the interactive introduction to architecture from the biographical perspective on GaudĂ.
The Ruta del Modernisme Reus takes you past almost 80 catalogued Modernisme buildings. Most of the route can be explored on foot. A plaque in front of each façade gives the name of the architectural landmark, the architect and the year it was built. This information helps you identify each building along the way and keep its architectural details in view.
Buildings and their history
The Institut Pere Mata is one of the outstanding works of European Modernisme. Its Pavelló dels Distingits is catalogued as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional. Casa Navà s, meanwhile, is considered one of the best-preserved examples of European Modernisme. The two buildings therefore offer different perspectives: for the Institut, the significance of the work and the pavilion’s classification are relevant; for Casa Navà s, its state of preservation is key. Guided tours of Casa Navàs last one hour and are led by specialist guides. This gives you a clear time frame for this part of your itinerary.
The EsglĂ©sia Prioral de Sant Pere also brings together architectural history and biography. The late Gothic church was built over a Romanesque church in the 15th century and consecrated in 1569. Antoni GaudĂ was baptised here. The sequence from the Romanesque predecessor to the late Gothic church and its consecration in 1569 makes the church’s architectural history easy to follow; the baptism also creates a personal connection to GaudĂ.
Festivals and religious traditions
The Festa Major de Sant Pere was recognised as a Festa Patrimonial d’Interès Nacional in 2010 and is celebrated on 29 June. The Festes de Misericòrdia are Reus’s second major festival and take place on 25 September. Their tradition tells of the apparition of the Mare de Déu de Misericòrdia to Isabel Besora in 1592. These festival dates give you a sense of the calendar; if you are planning to attend a particular year’s edition, check the programme for that year.
Two distinct places are associated with this tradition. The Santuari de Misericòrdia is a Renaissance building, with an interior decorated with frescoes by Josep Franquet, Joaquim Juncosa and Joan Juncosa. Next to the sanctuary, the Capella de l’Aparició marks the exact site of the apparition. Here, you can consider the story, the religious building and the memorial site in their respective contexts.
Wine heritage at the Estació Enològica
The Estació Enològica is a Modernisme complex built by Pere Casellas, reflecting Reus’s ties to the wine industry. The building houses the Casa del Vermut i del Vi, an enotourism centre. Visitors can learn about the building’s history and why Reus is known as the vermouth capital. Vermouth and wines can be tasted during a visit to the Estació Enològica. Check before travelling whether tastings are available on your chosen date. This history of wine and vermouth complements the architectural and historical themes that shape Reus as a cultural destination.
