Discover Alforja
Accommodation in Alforja
Alforja can be explored from several perspectives: two hiking routes differ in length, duration and difficulty; there are also historic religious buildings, a medieval town centre, activities at Celler Mas del BotĂł and traditional festivals. If you are looking for a hotel in Alforja, these highlights can help you decide what you would like to experience during your stay. The routes offer the most concrete points of comparison, while the church, hermitage and festivities provide further insights into the town.
Hiking: two routes with different levels of difficulty
The Ruta de les Ermites begins at Parc Amics d’Alforja. The circular route is 14.6 kilometres long, takes approximately four hours and is of moderate difficulty. Along the way, it offers views across the valleys of Alforja and much of the Tarragona coastline. The route also follows the historic path that pilgrims and processions have used for centuries to reach the sanctuary. It therefore combines a hike with the religious tradition associated with this path.
Route 4: El Mirador also starts at Parc Amics d’Alforja. It is 14.9 kilometres long, takes approximately five hours and is classified as difficult. Its destination is El Mirador, at 915 metres the highest point in the municipality of Alforja. On the way back, the route follows the old road to Porrera, which runs parallel to the Riera d’Alforja.
In direct comparison, Route 4: El Mirador is only 0.3 kilometres longer, but its estimated duration is about an hour more than that of the Ruta de les Ermites. The ratings also differ: moderate for the Ruta de les Ermites and high for Route 4. So if you are choosing between the two, the time required and the difficulty rating offer clearer guidance than the small difference in distance.
Churches, the hermitage and the old town
The Ermita de Sant Antoni dates from the 18th century. Many excursions are made to it, and it has a well-known spring. The church of Sant Miquel has a different building history: it was built in the 17th century on the foundations of an earlier Romanesque church. Together with the medieval character of the old town, these sites offer several historical points of interest, each providing a different perspective on Alforja.
The Ruta de les Ermites also has a historical dimension: its route follows the path that pilgrims and processions used for centuries to reach the sanctuary. Visitors interested in cultural heritage can therefore explore several distinct aspects—the history of a religious building, the town’s traditional appearance and the religious use of a path.
Discover local activities and festivals
At Celler Mas del BotĂł, visitors can learn how milk is made into six different types of cheese. They can also dress as beekeepers and learn how bees work in their hives. The two activities have different focuses: one provides an insight into cheese-making, while the other explores the life of bees in the hive.
The traditional festivals also have their own themes. The Festa Castellera is a festival in Alforja held in July. The Festa de l’Oli d’Alforja celebrates the arrival of oil from the first pressing and includes tastings of artisan products made in Alforja. The Festa del „Pataco“ takes place in August and is associated with a typical local dish. This distinction can be useful when planning your stay: oil and artisan products are at the heart of the Festa de l’Oli, while the local dish is the focus of the Festa del „Pataco“. If a particular festival is important to your trip, check the exact event dates in advance.
