Porrera: Sundials, architectural history and landscape
Accommodation in Porrera
If you’re looking for a hotel in Porrera, you can plan your trip around two distinct themes: the town’s historical heritage and a route with views over the Cortiella Valley. Sundials, churches, a bridge and a historic house offer specific points of interest for exploring the town’s culture. The buildings raise different questions from the themed routes: construction dates and architecture on the one hand, sundials, the history of houses and the landscape on the other.
Buildings and historical periods
The Ermita de Sant Antoni Abat dates from 1610 and stands on the summit of a steep hill. The parish church of Sant Joan Evangelista was built between 1763 and 1771; it is neoclassical in design and features Baroque elements. The Pont Vell was built in 1804. The construction dates therefore span the period from 1610 to 1804, giving the buildings a clear chronological sequence. At the same time, their different features add more than just chronology: the hermitage’s hilltop location, the parish church’s architectural styles and the bridge as a distinct type of structure. The town’s history can thus be explored not only through dates, but also through different architectural and geographical points of reference.
Sundials and historic houses
Sundials offer a distinctive thread to follow. The “Ruta de los relojes de sol de Porrera” (Porrera Sundial Route) runs through Porrera and includes fourteen sundials, most of them dating from the 19th century. Their number gives the theme a specific framework, while the dating of most of them points to a shared period. A broader historical perspective is offered by the “Un tomb per Porrera” tour. It lasts about 45 minutes and introduces visitors to the town’s cultural heritage, including some sundials and the mansions of 16 families who dominated the town in the 18th and 19th centuries. The approximate duration gives you a guide for planning your time. The two options have different emphases: the route focuses on the sundials, while the tour connects individual sundials with mansions and the history of the families.
A museum house with its original furnishings intact
The museum house Casa-museo Ca l’Amorós is a wealthy household in Porrera dating back more than 200 years. Its interior, furniture and household linen from the 19th century have been preserved unchanged. The age of the house and the 19th-century date of its furnishings provide different historical points of reference. Unlike the church and bridge, the focus here is on a wealthy home and its preserved interior. The history of the house therefore adds a different scale to the town’s buildings: its historical character lies not only in the age of the building, but also in the details preserved inside.
Routes and views over the Cortiella Valley
The “Les vinyes del Diluvi” route begins beside the building of the Cooperativa de Porrera and follows the Camà de l’Horta to the Cortiella River. It also follows part of the old royal road from Porrera to Falset. The route offers views of Porrera and the Cortiella Valley, with Montsant and the Serra de la Gritella visible beyond. This route therefore turns the focus not only on individual buildings, but also on the town, the valley and the ridges visible in the distance. It adds a landscape dimension alongside the historical themes of sundials, churches and houses.
