Discover Gandesa
Accommodation in Gandesa
Gandesa combines architectural history and archaeological heritage with wine traditions and local festivals. If you choose the town for your trip, you’ll find a variety of things to explore here: medieval architecture, the history of the Iberians, insights into the Battle of the Ebro, and recurring customs. The landscape around the Santuario de La Fontcalda is also one of the destination’s distinctive features.
Church, Gothic architecture and Iberian heritage
The Church of the Virgen de la Asunción has been classified as a cultural asset of national interest in the category of historic monuments. Construction began in the 12th century, and the building still retains a Romanesque apse and portal. The Casa de la Vila Vella adds another period to this architectural picture: this 15th-century building is an example of late medieval civil Gothic architecture and was partly absorbed by the church’s expansion. Thus, in Gandesa, Romanesque elements and a later Gothic civic building stand in a specific historical relationship.
The archaeological site of Coll del Moro, part of the Ruta de los Iberos, offers a glimpse further back in time. The Iberian settlement probably dates back to the 6th to 5th centuries BC. It includes one of the few surviving necropolises of Iberian settlements in Catalonia. Exploring this site adds evidence of a much older settlement history to the perspective offered by the town’s surviving architecture.
Remembering the Battle of the Ebro
The CEBE collection presents weapons, ammunition, uniforms and personal belongings from the material and documentary holdings of the Centre d’Estudis de la Batalla de l’Ebre. The centre was established at the initiative of a group of scholars and collectors from Gandesa who were interested in the Battle of the Ebro and in preserving documentary, military and cultural materials. The collection thus brings together different types of objects and documents, offering another way to explore the historical focus reflected in the centre’s name.
Experience the wine and plan your visit
The Celler Cooperatiu de Gandesa offers guided tours with wine tasting by prior reservation. If you’d like to include this in your travel plans, check the booking arrangements in advance. The Festa del Vi offers a different way to experience the wines of the Denominación de Origen Terra Alta: on the first weekend of November, wines from various cooperatives and private wineries are available for tasting around the Cooperativa de Gandesa. The tour and the festival therefore offer two different options: a booked guided visit or a recurring wine event. Confirm the dates and programme for the relevant year before attending the Festa del Vi.
Festivals and local traditions
The Festa de Sant Antoni takes place on 17 January, and its tradition in Gandesa has been documented in writing since 1801. Customs include the traditional collection of firewood in Gandesa, followed by an auction along with Coca and Rodot de Sant Antoni. For travellers who want to combine their stay with this festival, the date is a useful point of reference; check that year’s programme before travelling.
The Romeria a la Fontcalda also takes place on a set date in the annual calendar: the first Sunday in May. The procession sets off from the church for the sanctuary at 7 a.m. This early start sets the Romeria apart from an ordinary outing later in the day and may be worth bearing in mind when planning your visit. El Panilló is another tradition from Gandesa and is celebrated on All Saints’ Day.
The landscape at Fontcalda
At the Santuario de La Fontcalda, the Canaletes River narrows into a small gorge. Ponds and natural pools form along this stretch, and at the end of the gorge there is a thermal spring with a temperature of 25°C. This landscape can be considered as a distinct feature of Gandesa alongside its architecture, festival traditions and wine.
Figures and theatrical tradition
Processions also bring local culture to life: the figures En Gori and la Fontcalda of the Gegants de Gandesa are always accompanied by Gandesa’s “Etzimbori” grallers group. The theatre group La Farsa commemorates the historical event of 17 October 1319, known as the Farsa de Gandesa. The group’s activities included street entertainment and puppet theatre. Together with El Panilló and the festival days, these examples show different forms of local tradition without reducing them to a single event or season.
