Roquetes brings together striking landscapes, hiking trails and a scientific heritage. When planning your trip, it’s worth exploring its different highlights: from circular hikes with details on distance and difficulty to nature topics in the Cova Avellanes area and the Ebre Observatory. This way, you can tailor your stay to the interests that matter most to you.

Ravines, a Cave and a Nature Centre

The Barranc de Lloret and its tributaries, Pegunter, OriĂł and Barretes, are characterised by high rock walls, deep ravines, rock overhangs and unusual geological formations. The varied rock formations give the landscape its distinctive character.

Cova Pintada offers a different natural attraction: this large cave has a waterfall, stalactites and stalagmites, as well as a varied range of colours. Stalactites hang from the ceiling, while stalagmites rise from the cave floor—the terms refer to different types of cave formations. For those interested in geology, it offers a cave experience alongside the open rocky landscapes.

The Cova Avellanes area is home to a municipal nature centre housed in a former forester’s lodge. Several rooms and facilities are used for talks and environmental education activities. This makes environmental education another highlight, alongside the landscape itself.

Hiking and Getting Around

From Roquetes, you can reach the Cova Avellanes area in Els Ports via the Caragol road; the destination area lies beyond the Portell viewpoint. As road conditions can change seasonally, check local conditions before setting off.

At the start of the trail to Cova Avellanes, there is a designated car park in Roquetes for the Cova Avellanes – Marturi – Tres Pins – Fageda de Serrassoles – Clots de Pastor circular hike. The hike takes about 4 hours and 46 minutes, covers 11.57 km and is of moderate difficulty. As route details may be updated and access may change due to forest management or safety measures, check the latest route information and access conditions before setting out.

Another moderate circular hike is the Vall Caramella – Vall d’en Pastor route. It passes through the landscapes of the Barranc de la Caramella and Vall d’en Pastor and is 8.96 km long. This makes it 2.61 km shorter than the Cova Avellanes loop; both are rated moderate. The Racó del Moro route is one of the easier routes and ends at a pool of clear water. The details for the two circular hikes provide a clear guide to distance and difficulty, while the Racó del Moro stands out for its easier rating.

The viewpoint on 1,441 m-high Caro offers views of the massif’s interior and the lower stretch of the Ebro Valley. Interpretive signs complement the views, and the viewpoint has been adapted for people with reduced mobility.

Research and Cultural History

The Ebre Observatory was founded in 1904 and is a pioneering geosciences research centre in Roquetes (Baix Ebre). Its work combines scientific observation with advanced research, public engagement and heritage preservation. Its remit therefore goes beyond observation alone to include research and knowledge-sharing.

The Ebre Observatory offers individual guided tours one Sunday each month. These include the main instrument pavilions: the seismological, meteorological and astronomical pavilions. Check the dates and booking procedures before visiting, as they may change.

The history of La Lira Roquetense can also be understood through two dates: the workers’ society for education and mutual aid was founded in 1907, and the current building dates from 1912. The society’s founding year and the construction year of its present building thus mark different stages in its history.

Along the Former Railway Line

The former Val de Zafan railway line connected AragĂłn and Tortosa. On the approximately 2 km stretch between Roquetes and Tortosa, the path is lit, more than 4 m wide and has a comfortable surface for cycling and walking. It provides another way to get around on foot or by bike. Check the lighting and surface conditions on site.
