Bellvei: Heritage and Paths Through the Landscape
Accommodation in Bellvei
Bellvei combines a rural setting with a rich cultural heritage. The town is located on the historic N-340. Access roads to the AP-7 and Pau Casals motorway are less than ten minutes from Bellvei. A bus network connects the town with nearby cities; rail connections are available via the Sant Vicenç de Calders and El Vendrell railway stations. These different transport links may be as relevant to your choice of location as the landscape surrounding Bellvei.
Landscape and dry-stone paths
Vineyards, cereal fields and Mediterranean woodland shape the surrounding area. Bellvei’s rural paths are suitable for walks and hikes. The Ruta de la pedra seca a Bellvei offers a specific focus: it leads to eleven dry-stone structures, including huts and a well whose shaft is built of dry stone. The route also passes by Castell de la Muga. This path therefore brings both traditional construction methods and a named historic building into view.
Another architectural ensemble is Mas de la Muga. The building is in ruins; what remains includes a square tower with battlements and machicolations, as well as two cylindrical towers with attached turrets and pointed roofs. Torre de Bellvei, also known as Torre de Cal Roig, is incorporated into the Cal Roig building. It can be linked to Bellvei’s former fortification, the earliest documentation of which dates to 1037. This cautious historical interpretation differs from the vivid description of the surviving towers at Mas de la Muga.
Santa Maria de Bellvei and its history
The present-day church of Santa Maria de Bellvei was built in the 17th century, after the earlier church had disappeared. It became an independent parish in 1859. The single-nave building has a barrel vault and side chapels. Its façade features a portal with a straight lintel and a rectangular window with a stone lintel, stone jambs and a stone sill. A double-arched bell gable crowns the façade; the bells are dated 1738. The building thus illustrates both the church’s historical development and specific architectural details.
Festivals, figures and mural art
Bellvei’s Festa Major is dedicated to Santa Maria. It includes cultural events, dances, music and community gatherings. For the Corpus Christi festival, flower carpets are laid along Carrer Sant Joan; the celebrations also include a Corpus Christi procession attended by children who have celebrated their First Communion.
The town’s figures also bring together tradition and design. Tonet and Mariona are Bellvei’s two big-head figures: they depict children and wear custom-made clothes inspired by the clothing worn by children from wealthy families at the beginning of the 20th century. The group also includes four smaller Nans, representing spring, summer, winter, and night and day. Dona d’aigua, associated with Bellvei, represents a water fairy linked in Catalan mythology with rivers and pools.
The Colors i versos als carrers project comprises murals created in Bellvei’s streets in 2024 and 2025. Their subjects relate to the town’s life and traditions. Maria Martos painted every mural; verses by Anna Molina accompany them. The mural subjects, figures and festive customs therefore offer different points of focus: they draw on local traditions, although they do not all belong to the same category.
Crafts and culinary heritage
The Gorra de cop is part of the local craft tradition. It is attributed to the basket maker Roc Vidal, who had settled in Bellvei around 1800. Bellvei is considered the only place in Catalonia where Gorres de cop are made. The 2025 cultural programme included workshops on making this headpiece. They were intended to preserve, promote and pass on the local heritage; this does not imply a current workshop schedule. For travellers interested in crafts, this tradition is a distinct aspect of the town, alongside its buildings and festive customs.
Bellvei’s culinary heritage includes wine, olive oil and cured meats.
