L’Ampolla lies at the entrance to the natural harbour of Fangar and is therefore considered the gateway to the Ebro Delta. Coastal trails, rice fields and oysters offer different perspectives on a stay: nature and outdoor activities sit alongside experiences centred on rice culture and a local culinary speciality. When choosing your destination, you can make whichever of these aspects interests you most a focus of your trip.

Landscape between the sea and rice fields

Bassa de les Olles is directly connected to the sea and surrounded by rice fields. The connection between water and the rice-growing landscape is especially tangible here. The seabed is also part of L’Ampolla’s natural surroundings: offshore from the town, it includes part of one of the most important Posidonia meadows on the Mediterranean coast. These landscapes therefore range from rice fields to the marine environment.

Two routes with different characters

The “Els Ocells i l’Arròs” route passes through a protected area of the Parc Natural del Delta de l’Ebre. It can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The second route focuses on the coast: “Els penya-segats que van vestir-se de colors” starts in L’Ampolla, follows the GR 92 and heads towards L’Ametlla de Mar as far as Cala de l’Àliga.

This coastal route passes rocky stretches and small pebble coves, as well as reddish cliffs, pine forests and the sea. The routes can therefore be compared by their distinct features: one passes through a protected area and can be completed on foot or by bicycle. The other is defined by its coastal course and named destination.

Rice culture and oysters

Kan Kensho offers tours, workshops, excursions to rice fields and tastings centred on sake, koji and the rice culture of the Ebro Delta. Advance booking is required for these activities; check availability beforehand. These experiences connect the local rice-growing landscape with the culture of the Ebro Delta and add a culinary dimension to your stay beyond oysters.

L’Ampolla’s oyster is one of the highlights of the local cuisine. Its distinctive flavour is attributed to nutrients from the mix of Mediterranean salt water and fresh water from the Ebro. Those interested in this culinary speciality may also enjoy the Diada de l’Ostra: the celebration takes place on a Sunday in May and includes a tasting of oysters from the Ebro Delta and a demonstration of how they are prepared. As the exact programme may change, it is advisable to check the date and details in advance.

History and local memory

The “Les basses naturals” route explores clay basins that are part of L’Ampolla’s history and customs. People created these basins, which served as watering places for animals. The route thus connects with the landscape’s everyday uses in the past. Another facet of local memory is the bronze commemorative sculpture “el guerrer”. The French government gifted it to L’Ampolla in thanks for the help it had received.
