Alcover combines a historic town centre with cultural attractions and trails through the countryside at the foot of the Muntanyes de Prades. The Museu d'Alcover is housed in the historic Ca BatistĂł building, in the town centre between Tarragona, Reus and Valls. If you are looking for a hotel in Alcover, you can plan your stay around its buildings, exhibitions, or nature and cultural trails.

Museum and architectural history

The exhibition “Ca Batistó, modernitat burgesa” uses the building’s grand rooms to explore bourgeois ideas and the transition to a new society. Another exhibition, “Triàsic, explosió de vida”, interprets fossil remains and introduces visitors to life and the landscape of the Muntanyes de Prades at a time when a prehistoric sea shaped the area. The “Triàsic en família” experience is available year-round with advance booking.

Alcover’s churches also tell the story of different periods of construction. The Convent de Santa Anna is classified as a Bé Cultural d’Interès Nacional, or cultural asset of national interest. Its foundations date from the 16th century; in 1582, the building became a convent. The Església Nova, the church of Nostra Senyora de l’Assumpció, was built between 1578 and 1630. The Església Vella, also known as the Església de la Sang, is a Romanesque church dating from the late 12th century and was declared a historic-artistic monument in 1931.

The Església de Sant Miquel is considered Alcover’s first church. It already existed in 1154 and became the parish church in 1166. Ca Lluís Domingo, at Plaça del Portal 2, offers a different architectural accent: the work of architect Cèsar Martinell i Brunet combines functional architecture with Modernist elements. The building is privately owned and can only be viewed from the outside.

Fountains are also part of the town’s history. The Font Vella is Alcover’s oldest fountain and has medieval origins. The Font de la Plaça Nova was built in 1894. Water from the Font del Lleó was used to fill the washhouse or for irrigation.

Trails and landscapes

The trails vary in length, character and stated difficulty. The signposted CamĂ del Rourell, also called CamĂ dels Quints, is about four kilometres long, follows a circular route and is rated easy. The Ruta del Glorieta is a walking trail classified as local historical and cultural heritage. It links mills, irrigation channels, springs and water intakes; the route also includes sections of varying difficulty.

The Vall del Glorieta is considered a cultural and natural landscape in the Muntanyes de Prades area. MiMo is located in this valley, in a restored former drying building belonging to a paper mill. Another structure above the Glorieta River is the Pont dels Moros, also called the Pont del Molinet: an old architectural landmark with an arch.

The trail from Alcover to Mont-ral starts at the municipal estate of Mas de Forès. Its leisure facilities include a supervised, paid car park and picnic tables. This information can help you factor the starting point and the facilities available there into your plans.

Festivals and recurring events

If you are planning your stay around a festival, these recurring dates can help. The Fira de Bandolers takes place on the second weekend of October. It was established in 2002 to revive Alcover’s traditional Fira del Remei. On the third weekend of October, Alcover celebrates its Festa Major with events showcasing popular and traditional culture, as well as other performances and activities.

On 26 December, the children of Alcover gather in Plaça Nova to celebrate the Tió més llarg del món. On Good Friday, the Viacrucis al Calvari begins at 8 a.m. at the church of Nostra Senyora de l’Assumpció and continues to the Capelleta hill. If you are timing your trip to coincide with one of these festivals, check the latest event dates in advance.
