Accommodation in Vinyols
Vinyols i els Arcs brings together historic buildings, local festival traditions, and a strong agricultural character. For trip planning, there are several points of reference in terms of timing and theme: the medieval spring at La Fontcoberta, houses and a church from later centuries, and festivals tied to particular seasons or dates.
Architectural history and the town center
Cal Nicolau, also known as Casa de Donya Blanca, is protected as a cultural asset of local interest. The building was constructed in the early 18th century over older buildings that belonged to the Folc family. The current parish church, Església de Santa Caterina, was built between 1770 and 1778 over an earlier temple.
The defensive tower associated with Casa de la Vila is well preserved and was built in 1560 by Francesc Torrell i Pradell. Casa Torrell was probably built by the Torrell family toward the end of the 16th century. Casa Torrell is also architecturally connected to a defensive tower.
A central landmark is Plaça de la Vila, also known as el Replà . It is the main center of Vinyols i els Arcs. The castle and parish church once stood there; today, the parish church and town hall are located there. This square therefore brings together the town’s former and present-day buildings.
Near La Fontcoberta is a medieval covered spring, which is currently dry. It is possibly the only surviving architectural remnant of Castell dels Arcs. Remains of a structure that may have been Castell dels Arcs lie within the municipality, north of the new road between Salou and Cambrils.
Festivals and local cuisine
The Festa Major de Sant Joan is Vinyols i els Arcs’ summer festival dedicated to Saint John the Baptist. The celebrations include a bonfire on the eve of the festival, as well as cultural, sporting, and religious events on June 24. The Diada de la Samfaina is also held as part of this festival. It celebrates samfaina, a Catalan sauce made with seasonal vegetables and regional produce.
The Festa Major de Santa Caterina opens with the Vinyartia arts and crafts fair. Festival traditions also include a tasting of Caterineta, a drink typical of Vinyols. The two festivals thus highlight different culinary traditions: the Diada centers on a sauce made with seasonal and regional ingredients, while Santa Caterina features a tasting of a local drink. The specific annual festival program may vary.
The MaratĂł per Relleus offers another time-specific point of reference: it has been held in Vinyols i els Arcs since 2016 and takes place in September. If you are traveling specifically for a festival or the MaratĂł, check the exact dates and program in advance.
Agriculture and transport links
Vinyols i els Arcs is strongly shaped by agriculture. Its main crops include peaches, hazelnuts, and olives. This agricultural character adds another dimension to the town’s architectural history and festival traditions.
Roads connect Vinyols i els Arcs with Riudoms and Reus. The N-340 runs through the southern part of the municipality near Sant Joan dels Arcs and roughly parallel to the AP-7 toward Valencia. The railway station on the Tarragona–Tortosa line is in Cambrils.
