Poboleda: River Paths, Local History and Wine
Accommodation in Poboleda
Poboleda combines local history, paths along the Siurana and wine experiences. If you are looking for hotels in Poboleda, you can consider whether historic sites, walks by the water or wine-related visits should be the focus of your trip.
Landscape and Village Setting
Poboleda lies on the slope of a hill on the right bank of the Siurana River. The northern part of the municipal area is shaped by the last foothills of the Montsant Massif. The southern part extends across the northwestern slopes of the Sierra del Molló. These features describe the wider municipal area; the village itself lies on the Siurana.
Church, Manor Houses and History
A walk through Poboleda takes you past the doorways of the manor houses on Carrer Major. The church of Sant Pere Apòstol is another landmark in the village. It dates from the 18th century and is also known as the “Cathedral of the Priorat” because of its impressive size.
West of Poboleda, the Molí dels Frares, also known as Molí Draper, stands in the riverbed of the Siurana. The mill belonged to the Cartuja de Escaladei and was associated with a wool industry started by its monks. While the Cartuja de Escaladei was being built, the monks lived in Poboleda. The village’s history thus connects both the mill by the river and its historical ties to the Cartuja.
Walking Routes and Wine Experiences
Walking routes follow the Siurana to the Font del Mingot. There is a riverside spot there that is suitable for a picnic. A recreational area is located by the Ermita de Maria Assumpta. These destinations offer different ways to spend time outdoors: a riverside path, a picnic area and another recreational area by the Ermita.
Wine visits can also be a highlight of your stay. Mas Doix offers winery visits and walks through the vineyards with wine tastings; check current availability before you travel. Mas Sinén offers a guided visit to the winery and vineyards, with a tasting and views of the Priorat. Reservations are required for this visit. Genium Celler runs tours lasting about an hour and a half, with a tasting of two wines and a look inside the barrel room. Terres de Vidalba offers vineyard visits with a tasting at the highest point of the estate. Check current availability for these experiences before your trip as well.
Food and Getting There
Poboleda’s typical cuisine includes Cocas and Orejetas, romesco with escarole, almonds and hazelnuts, and wine from the DOC Priorat. The selection includes both sweet and savory dishes, nuts and wine. If local cuisine is important to your trip, these names offer a specific guide to the village’s food culture.
From Reus, you can reach Poboleda via the C-242 to La Venta d’en Pubill, then take the T-702. Check for any temporary road closures before setting off. The Priorat Route 14 reaches Poboleda at kilometer 7.35 and offers views of Montsant and wide-ranging vistas across much of the Priorat. If you plan to travel along this route, check the signage and conditions in advance.
