In Vilaverd, you can include a range of interests in your travel plans: heritage, landscape and hiking trails. The places and routes described range from prehistoric images and historic buildings to trails with clearly specified routes and durations.

Landscape and geological setting

Vilaverd’s landscape is characterised by woodland and agriculture. To the west, the foothills of the Muntanyes de Prades form part of the scenery; to the east is the Serra de Miramar, along with the riverside vegetation of the Francolí. A total of 378.13 hectares of the municipality lies within the Muntanyes de Prades Site of Community Importance (SCI), which is also part of the Natura 2000 network.

The municipality is also geologically interesting: part of it lies within the Esculls de la Riba Site of Geological Interest. It is characterised by the bioconstructed units of the La Riba Unit, with carbonate materials and dolomite deposits. The landscape can therefore be understood in terms of both its vegetation and named natural areas, and its geological character.

Cultural history and buildings

The Barranc del Mal Torrent, also known as the Barranc del Povet, has rock shelters and similar sites with pictorial representations. These have been dated from the Early Bronze Age to the Late Bronze Age III. The ravine is designated a BCIN (Cultural Asset of National Interest). The focus here is therefore on early pictorial evidence and a protected archaeological site.

The Santuari de la Mare de Déu de Montgoi stands on a small hill beside the railway station and has long been a place of worship for the people of Vilaverd. Worship of the Mare de Déu de Montgoi is documented from the 13th century; the present-day Santuari appears to date from the 15th century. The two dates refer to different aspects: the long-documented worship and the presumed construction date of the present-day sanctuary.

Another building with clearly recognisable architectural details is the Església de Sant Martí. Its main façade has a round-arched portal, a circular window and two upper openings for the bells. If you are interested in architectural forms, you can use these features as specific points of reference on the façade.

Ice houses and traces of gypsum mining

The ice houses of Vilaverd are underground cylindrical stone structures with vaulted roofs. They were used to make ice from compacted layers of snow separated by straw. Two well-preserved ice houses outside Vilaverd can be visited at the foot of the road, which has been slightly rerouted to protect them. This lets you connect the historic building form with its former use.

The Ruta de les Antigues Guixeres de Vilaverd passes former gypsum quarries and old gypsum kilns. It starts at Vilaverd railway station. Along the route, the Guixera del Tòfol, also known as dels Robusté, can be viewed from the outside. The viewing restriction is important to bear in mind when planning this stop.

Hiking trails and local festivals

The circular route De Vilaverd al Clot de’n Goda follows the boundaries of Vilaverd and passes through the valleys of the Francolí and the Brugent. At Clot d’en Goda, it is signposted as a health-promoting trail. The section on the GR 7 is marked with the white-and-red blazes of the FEEC long-distance trail; check the markings before setting out.

Specific tour details are available for the Punta Cucurulla del mas d’en Just i les Garrigues de Vilaverd route: it is 10.780 kilometres long, takes about four hours, is of medium to high difficulty, and has 629 metres of ascent and descent. The approximate duration and elevation gain and loss give you a guide for planning your time and hike; trail conditions may vary.

Local festivals also mark different seasons. The Festa Major de Vilaverd takes place in July for Sant Cristòfol. The winter festival honours Sant Martí, the town’s patron saint, and takes place in November. If you would like to plan your stay around one of these dates, check the festival dates as part of your planning.
