Ulldemolins combines hiking in the Congost de Fraguerau with sacred architecture and regional traditions. One specific hiking option is Route 2 from Ulldemolins to Sant Bartomeu, which takes three hours and passes several named locations. Churches, hermitages and local festivals complement the focus on the landscape with distinct cultural themes. If you are looking for a hotel in Ulldemolins, these differences can help you decide which aspects you want to shape your stay.

Hiking in the Congost de Fraguerau

The Congost de Fraguerau is the valley of the Montsant River between the Montsant and Llena mountain ranges. Conglomerate cliffs and lush vegetation define the landscape. At Cadolles Fondes, the river has hollowed out the rock, creating cliffs on both sides. A hike through the valley thus brings together a river landscape and striking rock formations.

The three-hour Route 2 Ulldemolins–Sant Bartomeu passes the Ermita de Sant Antoni, Cadolles Fondes, the Congost de Fraguerau and the Ermita de Sant Bartomeu. The latter is located in the Congost downstream from Ulldemolins and can only be reached on foot. Take this access restriction into account when planning and check the trail conditions before setting out.

At the Ermita de Sant Antoni i Santa Bàrbara, there is accommodation for 20 people, a camping area, bar service, and public tables and fire pits. If you plan to use any of these facilities, check their availability in advance; operating details may change.

Churches and hermitages

The church of Sant Jaume d’Ulldemolins is considered one of the most complete Renaissance buildings in Catalonia. It was built between 1584 and 1591 under the direction of Pere Blai. The Ermita de Santa Magdalena was founded in 1558; its wall paintings date from 1662 and are by Josep Juncosa. The construction period, founding year and dated paintings give each of these places its own historical significance.

The architectural form of the Ermita de Sant Antoni i Santa Bàrbara is also noteworthy: the irregularly shaped, single-storey building is built against the mountain rock. The Ermita de Sant Bartomeu is located in a side ravine of the Congost de Fraguerau. It may have been built over an older hermitage in the 13th century; this early building history remains a possibility.

The Santuari de la Mare de Déu del Loreto preserves a vow made by the town towards the end of the 17th century, after it was spared the 1685 locust plague. Alongside the stories of the buildings, this religious tradition connects Ulldemolins with a specific event from the late 17th century.

Festivals and local traditions

The Aplec de Sant Bartomeu is the most important festival at the Ermita de Sant Bartomeu and takes place on 24 August. The annual programme may vary. Ulldemolins also celebrates the Diada de la Truita amb Suc each year, a festival centred on a traditional dish. It began in 1982 as a street festival with a competition dedicated to the dish. Check the exact date of the Diada before your trip. This will help you decide how to balance a hike through the Congost, sacred architecture and local festival traditions when planning your stay.
