The Passeig poètic leads through the streets and squares of Vallfogona de Riucorb. Ceramic murals feature significant passages from the Rector de Vallfogona’s poetry, including love poems as well as burlesque and satirical themes. This lets you discover literary history in the town’s public spaces, too.
The old town and Santa Maria de Vallfogona
The old town has a medieval character. Its distinctive spaces include Plaça Major, other small squares and atmospheric corners. The church of Santa Maria de Vallfogona retains a slightly pointed Romanesque vault; its features are predominantly Gothic and include later repairs. The clock tower dates from the 16th century and is considered one of the oldest in Spain.
The parish’s history also goes back a long way: it is first documented in parish lists from the Diocese of Vic dating to the late 11th and early 12th centuries. According to tradition, the main portal incorporates architectural elements from the former chapel of Sant Pere dels Bigats. This link to the former chapel remains a traditional attribution.
Rural life and religious history
At the Espai d'entorn rural, an exhibition displays miniatures by Llorenç Solé and agricultural tools. Several local families helped assemble the tool collection; explanatory panels describe agricultural work processes. Visits require an appointment by telephone on 977 88 00 75 or 977 88 05 90. Check the details before your trip.
The Creu dels Penjats is a Gothic stone wayside cross from the 14th to 15th centuries, dating from the time of the Hospitallers. Its remains are near the original site by two holm oaks, at the end of the path from the town to the Era del Ferrer. Sant Pere dels Bigats is documented as early as 945 as an old Benedictine priory of the monastery of Santa CecĂlia de Montserrat. A reconstructed figure of Sant Pere has had an altar on the roof of the parish church since 2010. The vow made by residents to hold an annual thanksgiving procession to the chapel is also part of the tradition; the procession was subsequently held.
Trails, mills and surroundings
Carrer Johan Cruyff is the starting and finishing point for Vallfogona de Riucorb’s signposted routes. A hike to Font d’en Ballart and the remains of the chapel of Sant Pere dels Bigats passes through pine and holm oak woods and abandoned, wooded terraces. Check trail conditions before setting out. The celebration of Sant Cristòfol takes place on 10 July.
MolĂ de la Cadena consists of two grain mills: MolĂ de Dalt, the upper mill, and MolĂ de Baix, the lower mill. The lower mill retains its old interior structure, with a pointed roof and diaphragm-like arches. The upper mill looks like a medieval tower, with a round-arched portal made of voussoirs and a machicolated upper section. A brick chimney from a steam engine also remains in fields near MolĂ de la Cadena.
The Volta a Vallfogona de Riucorb circular route begins beside the former MolĂ del PerellĂł mill, which dates from the 12th century and was later converted into a residence. Nearby, but not in the town centre, the Balneari de Vallfogona is set among the wooded areas of the Espai Natural de les Obagues del Riu Corb. It began operating in 1901, offering showers, spray treatments and steam baths. If you plan to visit the Balneari, check access and services in advance.
