Sant Salvador combines a wide beach, houses in maritime style and places associated with Pau Casals. There are also routes through the maritime district and the coastal area of Les Madrigueres. When planning your trip, you can first decide whether you want to focus on sand and water, music history, waterfront architecture or nature watching. The information below gives you specific points of reference before you look for a hotel.

Beach and waterfront

Platja de Sant Salvador is a wide beach with almost two kilometres of fine, golden sand. The water is calm and shallow, making the beach ideal for families with children. Most of the continuous waterfront is accompanied by a pedestrian promenade, except for the section in the protected area of Les Madrigueres.

Old summer houses and other houses in maritime style have been preserved along the promenade. So it is not only the sand and water that shape the character of Platja de Sant Salvador, but also the buildings along the waterfront. If you would like to explore Sant Salvador on foot, the route “Sant Salvador: De port marítim a platja d’estiueig” takes you for a walk through the streets of the maritime district. It highlights the waterfront, offering a different perspective on the area from a day at the beach.

Pau Casals and the maritime district

The Museu Pau Casals is located in the summer house that Pau Casals had built on the beach at Sant Salvador. It offers insights into his life and human legacy. The Auditori Pau Casals is directly opposite Vil·la Casals in the maritime district. It opened in June 1981 and offers a continuous music programme throughout the year. The museum and the Auditori have different focuses: the museum centres on his life and legacy, while the Auditori focuses on its music programme.

A historical clue also points to the maritime past. There may have been a small port for coastal shipping at Sant Salvador de Mar. Documentary records of such a port date from the 16th to the 19th century. Its existence remains a possibility, not a certainty.

Les Madrigueres and walking routes

Les Madrigueres is a coastal area of around 30 hectares in the maritime district of Sant Salvador del Vendrell. It stretches from the railway line to the sea. The protected area is also the section where the pedestrian promenade does not run alongside the waterfront. In the Les Madrigueres natural area, which is being restored, visitors can visit the existing wildlife observation hide.

Another route is called “Coma-ruga – Sant Salvador – Sanatorio – Fondo del Mata – Coma-ruga” and passes through Sant Salvador. The two routes offer different ways to find your bearings: the route “Sant Salvador: De port marítim a platja d’estiueig” focuses on the streets of the maritime district and the waterfront; the route via Coma-ruga and Fondo del Mata also passes through Sant Salvador, but names several places in its route title. This allows you to distinguish the walk centred on the waterfront from a route that places Sant Salvador in a sequence of other named places.
