Salou: Coast, Nature and Culture
Accommodation in Salou
Salou Between Coast and Culture
Salou has plenty to explore, from coastal paths and coves to architecture, art and archaeological sites. If you’re looking for a hotel in Salou, you can start by considering which of these places matter most for your stay. Are you primarily interested in the coastal landscape, history and architecture, or both? The places below offer specific points of reference.
Coastline, Beaches and Paths
The Coastal Path is 9.49 kilometres long and runs along the coast from Punta de Sant Pere to RacĂł de Salou at Cap Salou. It passes Llarga Beach and the coves of Penya Tallada, Font, Vinya and Crancs. This identifies both the route and several individual coastal locations: the Coastal Path is the trail, while the coves and beach are individual points along the coast.
Salou has 25 beaches and coves, nine of which have facilities for visitors. This figure complements the individually named coastal spots with an overview of what the coastline has to offer. When comparing stretches of coast, you can therefore distinguish between an interest in the route and a focus on individual beaches or coves.
Nature, Geology and Coastal Landscape
Cala Morisca Park is a 9,200-square-metre area by the sea, with vegetation, sea views and cliffs. It is part of the Coastal Path and offers views of Cala Crancs. The focus here is on landscape features and views, while the park is also part of the coastal route. A distinct natural area and a longer path along the coast thus offer two different perspectives on the surroundings.
Cap Salou is a good place to observe seabirds that are difficult to see from the beach. Cap Salou is also designated an Espacio de interés geológico (EIG), or Area of Geological Interest, between the Ebro Delta and the Costa Brava. The Posidonia meadows at Cap Salou are protected by the European Union as habitats of community interest. Geological designation, birdwatching and the protection of Posidonia meadows represent different nature-related themes in the same coastal area.
Architecture, Art and History
Torre Vella combines a historic function with cultural use: it was built in 1530 on the orders of the Archbishop of Tarragona, Pere de Cardona, to protect this stretch of coast from pirate attacks, and is a cultural centre dedicated mainly to art exhibitions. Torre Vella is also home to the Museu de l’Esmalt Contemporani. Its collection includes 20th-century enamel works by artists from around the world. The site thus brings together the history of the coast and an international collection of enamel art.
Other buildings reflect different periods and architectural styles. The Church of Santa MarĂa del Mar was built in 1766 by the seafarers’ guild of Salou. It houses murals by LluĂs M. GĂĽell and baptistery paintings by Josep Grau Garriga. Chalet Bonet was built in 1918 as a late Modernist work by architect Domènec Sugranyes i Gras, a student and collaborator of GaudĂ. Font Lluminosa dates from 1973 and was created by engineer Carles BuĂŻgas.
La Masia Catalana offers a different focus: built in 1974, it was originally conceived as a monumental nativity scene. It is located in a green park with native vegetation and pine trees. Faro de Salou was inaugurated in 1858. A path by the lighthouse has three viewpoints: Mirador Sur, Mirador Centro and Mirador Norte.
Archaeological Sites and Practical Information
The Greek archaeological site of Kallipolis is located in the La Torre Alta area of Racó de Salou, right on the coast. Another archaeological point of interest is the park of the Roman villa of Barenys. It includes the remains of a rectangular pottery-production building, dated from the late 1st century BC to the middle of the 2nd century AD. Kallipolis’s coastal location and the production remains at Barenys offer two different points of reference for Salou’s archaeological heritage.
Salou’s tourist train runs a circular route connecting the city’s main sights. It operates seasonally, and routes may change. If you’re planning to use the train during your trip, check the timetable in advance.
