Discover Tivenys on the Ebro
Accommodation in Tivenys
Tivenys lies on the left bank of the Ebro and is surrounded by the mountain ranges of Serra de Cardó and Serra del Boix. The surrounding peaks and rock formations include Punta de l’Agulla, Creu de Santos, Roca Foradada and Buinaca. Whether you want to focus your stay on culture, scenery or outdoor activities, Tivenys offers several points of interest—from hydraulic engineering to archaeological sites and historical trails.
By the Ebro: structures and landscape
The Assut is a hydraulic structure measuring 375 metres long and 7 metres high. Castell de Som offers wide views over the Ebro valley and the Assut. This now-ruined fortification consists of walls with loopholes that enclose a small, narrow area. A walking route also connects the river and the structure: the Camà del parc a l’Assut runs from Tivenys town park along the Ebro to the Assut.
The riverside promenade is also clearly linked to the Assut. The Assut de Tivenys (Tivenys Lock) and Les Planetes family cycling route leads to Tivenys; from there, the riverside promenade leads to l’Assut. Tivenys is also suitable for river sports such as canoeing, as well as sport fishing for catfish, sea bass, shad and black bass.
Architecture and local history
Església Sant Miquel has three naves and eight side altars. Its central nave is designed in Gothic and Byzantine styles, while the façade is neoclassical. Beside it stands a notably tall bell tower with an octagonal ground plan. At Antiga església de Sant Isidre, a round-arched portal made of wedge-shaped stones has been preserved, along with a console and the Pinyol family coat of arms.
La Torre was part of a series of towers on both sides of the river that protected the upper estuary. Its structure is entirely square. Near the Assut is La Farinera, also known as the González brothers’ factory; the Ebro’s left-hand channel runs below it. La Farinera used the current in the channel to power wheels that crushed wheat and processed it into flour.
The history of MolĂ de Sorra began in 1957, when Fco. Beltran BarberĂ bought an existing mill in Tivenys, at C. Tortosa 78. The traditional mill operated with millstones and a hydraulic press. Together with La Farinera, these details illustrate two different forms of milling technology associated with water and grain processing.
Archaeology and trails
Poblat Ibèric is located on a hill on the left bank of the Ebro, right at the exit of the Pas de Barrufemes gorge. The site lies between Serra de Cardó and the northern edge of Ports de Tortosa-Besseit, beside the d’Àguiles and Vallplana mountain ranges. Settlement here dates back to the 7th century BC; a fortified tower house dates from the 6th century BC.
A signposted historical remembrance trail around Poblat Ibèric passes fortifications, trenches and defensive positions. Another outing leads to Pont d’Orient and onwards to Coll de Xeta, where Clenxa del Boix begins. The destinations and route connections are distinct: Camà del parc a l’Assut runs along the Ebro, while the remembrance trail focuses on the fortifications near Poblat Ibèric.
Market and local traditions
A market is held on Plaça Major on Wednesdays and Saturdays. It sells fruit, vegetables, salt cod, olives and roast chicken. Check the market day before travelling; the selection may change.
The Jota de Tivenys is currently performed only during the summer festival, with its melody and dance. Festival details may change. La Publicata is an event held as part of the main Sant Antoni festival and is historically associated with a reenactment of the Barraca. Performers walk through the town’s streets or ride mules, hinnies or donkeys, reciting ironic or sarcastic verses. The exact format may vary from one edition to another.
