El Morell: Discover its architectural history and festivals
Accommodation in El Morell
El Morell offers plenty to explore on a trip focused on local history, architecture and cultural events. Its buildings range from medieval mills and remnants of the town walls to structures dating from the 18th and 20th centuries. Recurring events and agricultural connections to peaches and hazelnuts add to its appeal.
Architectural history from the Middle Ages to the 20th century
Casal dels Montoliu stands at Plaça de l’Era 5 and dates from the 18th century. Its romantic garden was created when the building was extended in the 19th century. This makes it possible to distinguish the history of the building from that of the garden, which came later. Casal provides a concrete starting point for exploring the town’s architecture, with its development over two centuries also playing a role.
The parish church of Sant MartĂ is a Baroque building with a single nave and interconnected side chapels. The nave is the elongated main space of a church; the side chapels extend this space. The church can therefore be understood through its layout, not just its style. Those interested in different architectural forms will find here a different point of reference from Casal dels Montoliu.
Sections of the town walls have also survived: they date from the 14th and 15th centuries and are located along Carrer Major and at Plaça de la Font. A much later period is represented by Peixateria del Morell. The rationalist building was constructed in 1926 by architect Pablo Monguió and belongs to the first half of the 20th century. Together, these examples reflect different historical periods: medieval wall remnants, an 18th-century building with a garden dating from the 19th century, and a 20th-century structure.
Mills and rivers
Molins de la Granja de Santes Creus are medieval mill buildings near the FrancolĂ, within the municipality of El Morell. This brings a group of historic mills into view alongside the church, town walls and individual buildings. The Glorieta River crosses El Morell from west to east and flows into the FrancolĂ at the Granja. The mills and rivers therefore offer a different way to explore local history than the buildings in the town centre: here, historic structures are connected with the area’s waterways.
Events throughout the year
PrimaverArt takes place each spring, shortly after Easter, as a four-day street festival of the performing arts. The programme includes free performances of clowning, circus, dance, music and street theatre at various locations in El Morell. Dates and programme vary with each edition. If you want to plan your trip around PrimaverArt, check the dates for the relevant edition before making arrangements.
The Festa Major d’hivern in honour of Sant Martà is celebrated every year on 11 November. It offers a set date in autumn, while PrimaverArt brings a multi-day cultural programme to spring. The two events therefore differ both in the season and in their format.
Agricultural connections
Peaches and hazelnuts are grown in El Morell, and these crops have made the town well known. They add an agricultural dimension to its architectural history and events. Together, they offer a range of themes to explore during a stay: historic architecture, surviving medieval traces, rivers, cultural events and local crops.
