Altafulla offers several distinct points of interest for a trip: the medieval historic centre of Vila Closa, Roman history at Els Munts, the coast and trails in Baix Gaià. When looking for a hotel, you can first decide what interests you most: historical sites and guided tours, the beach, or walking and cycling routes?

History between Vila Closa and the Castell

Vila Closa is Altafulla’s old medieval walled centre. The guided tour of Vila Closa includes the Sant Martí Church and must be booked in advance. Castell d'Altafulla, also known as Palau dels Montserrat, dates back to 1059; its guided tours last 30 minutes. These two historical sites differ in scale and visiting format: Vila Closa refers to the walled centre as a whole, while the Castell is visited on a half-hour guided tour.

Roman villa and summer tours

The Roman villa of Els Munts was built in the 1st century AD near Altafulla beach. It is part of the archaeological complex of Roman Tarraco, which was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Els Munts therefore has both a direct connection to the coast and a place within a larger Roman complex. In summer, the Museu Nacional Arqueològic de Tarragona holds theatrical tours at Els Munts. If you would like to include this seasonal activity in your travel plans, check the dates in advance. The year the villa was built and the year of its UNESCO designation refer to two different periods.

Coast and getting your bearings

Altafulla’s Playa del Canyadell is a coastal attraction: a small, semi-urban cove with fine golden sand. The RENFE railway line is also useful for getting your bearings: it separates the town centre from the beach area, and Altafulla-Tamarit station is on the line. The town centre and coastal area are therefore distinct points of reference when planning your trip, while Playa del Canyadell gives the coastal theme a specific cove to explore.

Walking or cycling in Baix Gaià

The Ronda Verda del Baix Gaià begins near the Ermita de Sant Antoni d'Altafulla. From there, you can explore the route on foot or by bicycle; it comprises a network of rural paths about 30 kilometres long, linking several municipalities in Baix Gaià. The approximate length refers to the path network. Its regional character sets this option apart from a guided tour at a single site: the focus is on rural paths and connections between several municipalities.

A taste of local cuisine

Olla d'Altafulla is another distinctive local offering. It is made with a vegetable sofregit, chickpeas, potatoes, rabbit, chicken and pork; its characteristic feature is a secret romesco sauce. The dish adds a culinary dimension to the historical and landscape-related themes. If regional cuisine is among your interests, you can include Olla d'Altafulla as a separate point of interest in your travel plans.
