Xerta: Cycling Routes, the Ebro and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Xerta
Xerta offers visitors several ways to explore the area: routes through the municipality, history along the Ebro, and local festivals and food culture. When planning a stay, you can choose to focus on cycling, walking, excursions or culture. The places and activities give the trip different themes, without requiring a single set itinerary.
Routes, Via Verda and the Ebro
In Xerta, there are walking, excursion and mountain biking routes along paths that cross the municipality and reach the foot of the Els Ports massif. Another route is the Ruta de la Barca, which runs through the orchards below the town. This offers a choice of routes through different landscapes. The paths to the foot of Els Ports appeal to different interests than a ride through the orchards; information about the activities can help you decide what you would like to focus on during your trip.
Estació de Xerta offers bicycle rentals, as well as shuttle and pickup services on the Via Verda de la Val de Zafán–Terres de l’Ebre. Next to the station is a landscaped family recreation area with picnic tables and benches, a fountain, a children’s playground and parking. If you are exploring the Via Verda, Estació offers both bicycle rentals and route services, as well as an area with the facilities mentioned above.
The Trinxeres del Barranc dels Fornets lie alongside the Via Verda. Their development for visitors pays tribute to the cultural heritage of the Spanish Civil War and contributes to historical remembrance. The Ebro offers a different perspective on activities in Xerta: navigation and sport fishing are among the activities on the river. This makes it possible to consider routes on land and activities on the water as different travel interests, without combining them into a single excursion.
Buildings and local history
The Centre d’InterpretaciĂł del Riu de Xerta is located in Xerta’s former railway station. To visit, you can make a reservation by calling 644 450 105. The route of the manor houses also leads to traces of the past: the architectural remains along the route include the 16th-century chapel of Bishop SentĂs.
Casa Ceremines is one of Xerta’s most distinguished manor houses. Its present-day appearance dates to a renovation in 1887, a few years after Ramon Martà i Tomàs acquired the house. The present-day Church of the Assumption of Mary and Sant Martà was expanded between 1580 and 1690. These dates place the buildings’ histories in different periods: Casa Ceremines is associated with the 1887 renovation, while the church’s expansion took place in the late 16th and 17th centuries.
Another important structure is L’Assut de Xerta, a historic waterworks in the Ebro, completed in the early 15th century. Together with the Centre d’Interpretació del Riu, it offers insight into different aspects of Xerta’s relationship with the river: one is a structure in the Ebro, the other an interpretation centre in the former railway station. The manor house route, the church and Casa Ceremines add architectural history in the town to these themes.
Festivals and specialities from Xerta
Sant Martà is Xerta’s main festival, dedicated to the town’s patron saint, and takes place on 11 November. Traditional events include vaquillas (young bulls) in the streets, a communal dinner of beef stew and the Jota Xertolina dance. These customs give the festival its own sequence of street events, a shared meal and dancing. The date and traditional elements described characterize the festival without anticipating a specific programme for any particular year.
Local cuisine also offers two distinctive specialities. Fogasseta is a round loaf of bread filled with an omelette made with artichoke, spring garlic and sausage. Torrons de Xerta are round sweets made with hazelnuts, honey and sugar; they have been made according to the same recipe for centuries. The savoury-filled Fogasseta and the sweet Torrons differ in both shape and ingredients. Both are traditional foods that connect Xerta with its agricultural food culture.
When looking for a hotel in Xerta, you can plan your trip around the interests that matter most to you: routes and cycling, architectural and local history, the Sant Martà festival or the town’s specialities. This lets you choose a destination based on the themes you would like to explore during your stay.
