Duesaigües: Churches, Viaduct and Baronia Trails
Accommodation in Duesaigües
Duesaigües brings together a Renaissance church and striking examples of industrial heritage, as well as opportunities for hiking and cycling. For trip planning, Santa Maria, the dels Masos Viaduct and the lime kilns on the Camí de Porrera are particularly central to its cultural character. Several excursions also take in the village and its surroundings. If you are looking for hotels for a trip to Duesaigües, you can consider whether church and industrial history, or hiking and cycling, will be the focus of your stay.
Church, Viaduct and Lime Kilns
The parish church of Santa Maria is a Renaissance-style church documented since the 14th century. It was rebuilt on the site of an older church and consecrated in 1753. The two dates refer to different milestones: the 14th century marks its documentary record, while 1753 is the date of its consecration following reconstruction.
The dels Masos Viaduct is named after the Barranc dels Masos and reaches a maximum height of 36 metres. It has been recognised as part of Catalonia’s industrial heritage. The viaduct is visible as you enter Duesaigües from the T-313 road.
There are several old lime kilns on the Camí de Porrera. Two are within the municipality of Duesaigües and are 80 metres apart. The lime kiln on the Camí de Porrera is listed as number 49011 in Catalonia’s Architectural Heritage Inventory; its industrial use is dated to the 19th and 20th centuries. Along this route, you will therefore encounter several lime kilns, including one example whose industrial use is more precisely documented.
Hiking and Routes
Hiking is possible in Duesaigües on terrain considered relatively easy. Road cycling and mountain biking are also possible. The “Caminos empapados de historia” walking route descends to Duesaigües along a PR trail that runs parallel to the Rasa de Vilamanya.
The “Pel Sud de la Baronia” excursion is suitable for hiking or mountain biking and follows the surfaced PR trail between Duesaigües and Castell-monestir d'Escornalbou. The “Camins de la Baronia d'Escornalbou” excursion goes to Duesaigües and L’Argentera, as well as the surroundings of Castell-monestir d'Escornalbou. Another route, “Ruta per la Baronia d’Escornalbou,” includes guided visits in Riudecanyes, Duesaigües and L’Argentera. For specific plans, it is advisable to check the dates and availability of these visits in advance.
When choosing a route, you can distinguish between the mode of travel and the area covered: “Pel Sud de la Baronia” specifies hiking and mountain biking, as well as the surfaced PR trail between Duesaigües and Castell-monestir; “Camins de la Baronia d'Escornalbou” also takes in L’Argentera and the surroundings of Castell-monestir. Local trail conditions can change, so check them before setting out.
