Minas Gerais: World Heritage, nature and regional culture

In the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais, travelers can experience cultural and historical heritage, nature and gastronomy. UNESCO heritage and history

Minas Gerais is home to four UNESCO World Heritage Sites. They include the Historic Town of Ouro Preto, the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus de Matosinhos in Congonhas and the Pampulha Modern Ensemble in Belo Horizonte. These three examples alone point to different historical and cultural highlights. Ouro Preto preserves centuries-old churches, colonial houses, museums and former gold mines. The gold mines illustrate how gold mining worked during the colonial period. Congonhas is represented by its sanctuary, a World Heritage Site, while Pampulha is a modern ensemble.

The historic center of Diamantina also brings together local history and landscape. It bears witness to the conquest of Brazil’s interior and to the emergence of a distinct culture shaped by explorers, diamond seekers and representatives of the Portuguese Crown. The center lies beside a steep valley in rocky mountains; its winding streets follow the natural topography. The Cristais Mountains are considered a protected natural monument and are inextricably linked to the historic site. In Diamantina, you can therefore consider both the historical significance of the place and its distinctive setting in the landscape.

Compare nature parks and routes

Minas Gerais has 94 protected areas, safeguarding almost two million hectares across the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga biomes. Tourism is established in 17 of the state’s nature parks. A specific route comparison can be found in Ibitipoca State Park: the Circuito das Águas is about five kilometers long. Its rating ranges from easy to moderate, depending on the attraction and visitors’ physical condition. The Circuito Janela do Céu is 16 kilometers long in total and is the park’s longest and most difficult loop trail. Length and difficulty therefore offer different points of reference when choosing a route. The Circuito das Águas rating remains subject to the conditions mentioned.

Regional culture and cheesemaking

Craft traditions are also part of Minas Gerais’ cultural offerings. The artisanal production of Minas cheese is recognized as Brazilian cultural heritage; the craft of bell ringers is also recognized. At cheese farms in the Serro region, visitors can learn about cheesemaking—from milking the cows to aging the wheels—by arranging an appointment in advance. The visit offers insight into several stages of the production process and adds a culinary craft to the experience of historic places. Ouro Preto can be reached by car via the BR-040 and BR-356 highways. Regular buses also run daily between Belo Horizonte and Ouro Preto.
