Accommodation in Araxá
Araxá’s museums and cultural sites offer a range of different perspectives. Alongside collections of art and local history, there are religious traditions, historic buildings, and a walking trail. This can help you decide what to focus on at the destination, whether you’re more interested in art, the history of the Black community, architecture, or outdoor activities. This thematic overview can help guide your search for a hotel in Araxá.
Collections: Art and Local History
The Museu Calmon Barreto displays 257 works by Calmon Barreto. The Memorial de Araxá preserves 1,406 objects belonging to 220 people associated with the city’s history. The collections therefore have distinct focuses: one centers on the work of a single artist, while the other contains objects connected to many people in the city’s history. If you see art and the city’s collective memory as different travel interests, these figures help make each focus clear.
Buildings with a Historic Function
On Praça Arthur Bernardes stands the former railway station of the Estrada de Ferro Oeste de Minas, now home to the Fundação Cultural Calmon Barreto. The building was constructed in 1926 and is protected as a municipal heritage site under Municipal Law No. 2,411 of December 28, 1990. The building thus brings together its former use as a railway station and its current role as the headquarters of the cultural foundation.
The Museu da Memória Legislativa Araxaense is housed in the former Câmara Municipal building, the Palácio Nagib Feres. This building, too, reflects a former public function. Together, the two buildings point to different aspects of local history: the former railway station and the municipal council.
Memory and Religious Tradition
The Centro de Referência da Cultura Negra preserves the history and memory of the Black community. Its gallery features objects, biographies, and photographs of notable citizens. Free guided tours are available on operating days. The combination of a collection and guided tours gives this cultural site a distinct focus among Araxá’s places of remembrance.
The Museu Sacro da Igreja de São Sebastião was established by Law No. 2,468 of November 14, 1991, to preserve the religious and artistic history of Araxá and its people. It is temporarily closed for renovation.
The Feast of São Sebastião is celebrated on January 20 and has been held in Araxá since 1811. Araxá ambrosia has also been recognized as intangible cultural heritage since 2011 and is protected by the Instituto Estadual do Patrimônio Histórico e Artístico de Minas Gerais (Iepha). These two traditions add distinct cultural themes to the history of the museums and buildings: a religious celebration held on a set date and a protected local recipe.
Trails and Buildings in the Surrounding Area
Parque do Cristo has a walking trail approximately 1.4 kilometers long. Its approximate length gives a concrete sense of the scale of this outdoor activity, offering a different focus from the cultural sites and historic buildings.
The hot springs at the Complexo do Barreiro are close to Araxá and connected to the Grande Hotel by an elevated walkway. This architectural connection adds another perspective on the destination’s surroundings to the local cultural and historical themes.
