Lagoa Santa: Nature, Caves and Culture
Accommodation in Lagoa Santa
Nature and culture come together in Lagoa Santa. Parque Estadual do Sumidouro offers insights into the karst landscape and its caves, while leisure activities along the waterfront take center stage at Lagoa Central. Historic buildings, cultural traditions and local products round out these varied travel experiences.
Karst Landscape and Protected Area
Parque Estadual do Sumidouro is located in the municipalities of Lagoa Santa and Pedro Leopoldo. This 2,004-hectare area is a fully protected conservation unit. It was established by State Decree No. 20,375 of January 3, 1980, and defined by Law No. 19,998 of December 29, 2011. Its purposes include protecting the environment and cultural heritage, as well as research, environmental education and tourism.
Carbonate rock, springs, sinkholes and caves shape the landscape. Its rich cave system includes numerous stalactite and stalagmite formations and bat colonies. The diverse vegetation includes species from the Cerrado and the Atlantic Forest biome. The geology, cave fauna and plant life thus represent different aspects of the protected area: the caves are not only geological formations, but also habitats.
Gruta da Lapinha, Trails and Climbing
Gruta da Lapinha is located within Parque Estadual do Sumidouro and the Área de Proteção Ambiental da APA-Carste de Lagoa Santa. It is 511 meters long and 40 meters deep. During a visit, you can admire the stalactite and stalagmite formations and learn about the processes that formed the karst landscape. Inside the cave, the focus is therefore on the formations and how the landscape was shaped.
Activities in the park include the Circuito Lapinha, Trilha da Travessia and Trilha do Sumidouro. There are also three climbing options on the Lapinha rock faces, with varying levels of difficulty. The activities offer different ways to explore: the cave visit takes you to the formations and karst processes, while the trails and climbing options provide other ways to experience the protected area.
Leisure at Lagoa Central
The waterfront promenade at Lagoa Central offers a different focus from the cave landscape. It is 6,300 meters long and is used for recreation, cycling, walking and sports. If you want to combine nature experiences with outdoor activity, you can choose from the caves, activities in the park and various ways to enjoy the lakeshore.
History and Architecture
Within Fazenda Fidalgo stands Capela de Sant’ana, built in 1745. The city has designated it as protected tangible cultural heritage. Capela do Rosário, in turn, was built in the early 19th century and displays typical architectural features of 18th-century chapels. In this case, the building date and architectural tradition therefore belong to different centuries.
In the Fazenda Fidalgo area, a cross marks the place where Dom Rodrigo was buried; it is considered a historic landmark of the Bandeira de Fernão Dias. Santuário Arquidiocesano Nossa Senhora da Saúde is also part of Lagoa Santa’s history: it is a city landmark. Congado is one of Lagoa Santa’s cultural expressions.
Local Products and Traditions
Rota das Doceiras is a tourist route that takes visitors to the homes of several local producers. In the Lapinha area, visitors can learn about the making of sweets, traditional baked goods and handicrafts. A market on the waterfront promenade at Lagoa Central offers visitors a variety of food and handmade products; the specific selection may change over time. The route and the market have different focuses: Rota das Doceiras centers on the producers’ homes and how products are made, while the promenade features food and handicrafts.
