Divinópolis: Green Spaces, Museums and Traditions
Accommodation in Divinópolis
Divinópolis combines Parque da Ilha on the Rio Itapecerica with museums dedicated to the city's history, religious art and cultural traditions. This offers several ways to plan your stay: enjoy the outdoors, visit exhibitions or attend an event. If you are looking for a hotel, this selection of themes can be a starting point; for specific travel dates, event dates and current visitor information are key.
Green Space and Outdoor Activities at Parque da Ilha
Parque da Ilha lies on the banks of the Rio Itapecerica and is one of Divinópolis's largest green spaces. A route for walking and cycling adds opportunities for exercise. The park also has a 1,500-square-metre skate park, one of the largest in Minas Gerais. This means the park offers different ways to spend your leisure time in the same place: a route for walking and cycling, as well as a skate park.
Parque da Ilha is open daily from 6 a.m. to 8 p.m. Opening hours, access and the condition of the facilities may change, so check the current arrangements before your visit. When planning your day, a walk or bike ride and using the skate park are different reasons to visit the park.
City History in Museums and Exhibitions
Since its establishment in 1986, the Museu Histórico de Divinópolis has been housed in an old townhouse on Praça Dom Cristiano in the city centre. Its collection includes art objects and documents relating to the history and memory of the municipality. The museum thus brings art together with records of the municipality's past.
The Estação de Memórias, an exhibition centre that opened in Divinópolis in 2023, offers a more focused perspective. It combines objects relating to railway history with texts about the city's railway history. This distinction can help you choose your cultural itinerary: the Museu Histórico focuses on the municipality's art, history and memory, while the Estação de Memórias centres on railway history. If you are planning a museum visit, check current opening hours and access arrangements in advance.
Events and Living Traditions
Divinaexpô is recognised as intangible cultural heritage of Divinópolis, under Law No. 8.995 of March 22, 2022. Since its first edition in 1970, it has been held annually at the Parque de Exposições of the Sindicato Rural de Divinópolis. The programme includes concerts by nationally known Sertanejo artists and bull- and horse-riding competitions. Artists and competitions may vary, so check the dates and current programme before travelling.
Missa Conga has been celebrated in Divinópolis since 1977 and has been led by Frei Leonardo since then. For the 48th edition, a procession travelled along Rua São Paulo, Avenida Antônio Olímpio and Rua Rio de Janeiro to Praça do Santuário. At 4 p.m., the traditional Café de São Benedito was served there to the guards. The route and time refer to that edition; the annual arrangements may vary. The programme for the relevant year should therefore guide your travel plans.
Church Art and Heritage Preservation
The frescoes in the Santuário de Santo Antônio were painted by Frei Humberto Randag. On November 15, 1988, they were listed for protection as a heritage site by the mayor of Divinópolis, Dr. Aristides Salgados dos Santos, under Law No. 2.459. The Catedral Divino Espírito Santo in central Divinópolis is a Catholic church with ceiling and side-wall paintings. It is also the episcopal see of the Diocese of Divinópolis and houses the Museu Sacro Religioso.
The two sites have different points of focus: at the Santuário, the frescoes and their heritage protection take centre stage; at the Catedral, the paintings, its role as an episcopal see and the sacred art museum come together. If you would like to visit these places, check current access arrangements in advance.
