Accommodation in Ponte Nova
Ponte Nova brings together a municipally protected historic town center, named heritage buildings, a riverside landscape, and regional cultural heritage. For travelers who consider history and architecture when choosing a destination, individual sites in the Centro Histórico and the municipality’s wider cultural and landscape connections are all of interest.
Historic Town Center and Buildings
The Núcleo Histórico Urbano de Ponte Nova is a 9.85-hectare area with 182 homes, municipally protected as a historic town center. The corresponding protection measures date from 2018, 2019, and 2021. The area and number of homes give the protected core a different scale from that of a single building: here, a larger urban area is considered.
In the Centro Histórico, the Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is located at Praça Getúlio Vargas 92. It is an architectural and urban structure that was placed under municipal heritage protection in 2021 and 2022. The Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário is located at Praça do Rosário in the Centro and forms part of the municipal cultural heritage as an architectural and urban structure; it was municipally inventoried in 2000 and 2011. Together, the two sites offer different points of reference for viewing the city’s religious architecture and built heritage.
A different type of structure is the Pontilhão Férreo, an architectural and urban structure over the Rio Piranga between the Palmeiras and Triângulo neighborhoods. It was placed under municipal heritage protection in 2008. Here, the bridge, river, and two named neighborhoods have a concrete spatial relationship—unlike the religious buildings in the Centro. The Rio Piranga in the Centro is also part of the municipal cultural heritage as an urban and landscape ensemble; the entries in the municipal inventory date from 2014 and 2026. Thus, alongside individual buildings, the riverside landscape and urban space are also among Ponte Nova’s points of interest.
Landscape and Natural Features
The Cachoeira Sesmaria adds a natural landscape perspective. The waterfall in Ponte Nova is approximately 100 meters high and attracts tourists from across the region seeking beautiful scenery and contact with nature. This is a different kind of excursion interest from the architecture and historic town center. As conditions at the site may change, it is worth checking them before visiting.
The APA Reserva Ecológica Vau Açu is located in Vau Açu, within the municipality of Ponte Nova. It forms part of the municipal cultural heritage as an urban and landscape ensemble; it was added to the municipal inventory in 2021.
Cultural Connections in the Municipality and Region
In the Rosário do Pontal district of Ponte Nova, the Cemitério dos Escravos is located on Fazenda Urtiga and forms part of the municipal cultural heritage as an architectural and urban structure. In the same district, in the Povoado Chopotó, the Festa de Nossa Senhora do Carmo was recognized as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality of Ponte Nova in 2008. These two heritage references represent different categories: a built structure and a festival with intangible cultural heritage status.
In the Ana Florência district, the Locomotiva a Vapor is a movable cultural asset that was placed under municipal heritage protection in 2000 and 2001. Compared with the structure on Fazenda Urtiga, the locomotive belongs to a different type of cultural heritage. Together, the sites mentioned show that the municipality’s cultural connections are not limited to buildings.
The wider region adds another dimension with Goiabada Cascão da Região de Ponte Nova, a regional product registered as intangible cultural heritage of the municipality since 2016. This culinary cultural connection adds another facet of the region to its architectural and landscape themes.
