A trip to Luminárias can bring together cultural history, nature watching, and cycling. The churches are in town; waterfalls and Pico do Cruzeiro are in the vicinity of the Complexo da Serra Grande. This is about eight kilometers from the center, in the direction of Carrancas. Pico do Gavião, by contrast, is within the municipality of Luminárias. These different geographical locations can help you plan the focus of your trip.

Cultural history in Luminárias

Construction of the Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora do Carmo began around 1942. The Capela do Carmo, also known as Igreja Velha, has a different historical connection. It was built on the grounds of the former Fazenda of matriarch Maria José do Espirito Santo. In the 18th century, Maria José do Espirito Santo donated part of her Fazenda for the construction of the chapel. Luminárias therefore has two distinct stories side by side: the construction history of the Matriz and the Igreja Velha’s connection with a Fazenda and its benefactor.

Waterfalls in the Serra Grande area

The Complexo da Serra Grande includes three waterfalls. Cachoeira da Serra Grande forms a large pool with shallow and deep areas, as well as a small sunny sandy beach. At Cachoeira da Jandira, the calm water is a draw for visitors who want to admire the scenery and swim. The waterfalls therefore offer different landscape experiences: the pool and sandy beach define Cachoeira da Serra Grande, while the calm water takes center stage at Jandira. Together, these features provide a concrete point of reference when choosing nature destinations near Luminárias.

Viewpoints and their locations

Pico do Cruzeiro, also called Serra Torre, is in the Serra Grande or Serra do Mandembe region, about eight kilometers from the center of Luminárias in the direction of Carrancas. It is in the same area as the Complexo da Serra Grande. You can watch the sunrise and sunset from the viewpoint. The road there is signposted; check road conditions before setting out.

Another scenic spot is Pico do Gavião, within the municipality of Luminárias. It reaches an elevation of about 1,500 meters and offers a 360-degree panoramic view of the region. Unlike the Serra Grande destinations, which are about eight kilometers from the town center, Pico do Gavião is within the municipality of Luminárias.

Cycling on unpaved roads

Luminárias has cycling routes on unpaved roads, with challenging climbs and expansive views. If you want to include cycling in your trip, consider the road surface and climbs when planning your route. The expansive views are another feature of the routes. Check trail conditions before setting out, as they can change.
