Discover Montezuma: Nature, Water and Culture
Accommodation in Montezuma
Montezuma in Minas Gerais brings together nature, water and local history. When planning your trip, you can focus on different things: trails and waterfalls define the surroundings of Balneário de Montezuma, a hiking route in the state park leads to an amethyst mine, and Serra da Macaúba is known for its rock paintings. There is also an annual religious and cultural celebration, as well as the history of the early settlement of Água Quente.
Nature and hiking destinations in Montezuma
Balneário de Montezuma is surrounded by trails, waterfalls and rest areas; the area is associated with ecotourism. In Parque Estadual de Montezuma, a hiking route leads to an amethyst mine. If you would like to include this route in your plans, check local access conditions.
The two places offer different experiences: at Balneário, the focus is on an area with several natural features, while at Parque Estadual, it is on a hiking route with the amethyst mine as its destination. This lets you decide whether to focus more on trails and waterfalls or on a route leading to a specific destination.
Cerrado, protected areas and landscape
Parque Estadual de Montezuma was established to protect various animal and plant species; its vegetation is typical of the Cerrado. The park can therefore be understood both in terms of its hiking route and its conservation role. The RDS Nascentes Geraizeiras is also located near the destination. This 38,177-hectare protected area was established to protect the Cerrado and preserve aquifers in the north of Minas Gerais. It encompasses about 200 springs and spans the municipalities of Montezuma, Rio Pardo de Minas and Vargem Grande do Rio Pardo.
Another landscape feature is Pequizeirão, a large tree in the locality of Roça do Mato, 34 km from downtown Montezuma. Thus, an extensive protected area with numerous springs and a single natural feature in a locality outside the town center offer two different spatial perspectives.
Rock paintings, festival and local history
Serra da Macaúba combines clear, well-preserved rock paintings with appealing natural landscapes. It adds a cultural dimension to the nature-related attractions, while the protected areas put the Cerrado and its animal and plant life in the spotlight.
Festejos da Padroeira Santa Ana e São Joaquim is an annual religious and cultural celebration in Montezuma honoring Saint Anne and Saint Joachim. If you would like to plan your trip around the celebration, check the dates for the relevant year. The 2025 edition featured cultural performances, music shows, stalls selling typical foods, auctions and raffles.
The town's history also goes beyond individual attractions. In the early 19th century, the discovery of a hot spring on the Fazenda Tábua estate drew residents and visitors; the settlement that initially became known as Água Quente then developed in the municipality of Montezuma. This story is part of the municipality's thermal-water tradition and offers a distinct historical perspective from today's nature and cultural experiences.
