Different themes come together in Viçosa: an eclectic building with a clear architectural history, natural history and communication museums, and protected areas of the Atlantic Forest. This gives you several areas to focus on when planning your stay—from architecture and history to plants, animals and environmental education. Several of the institutions mentioned are located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa; Casa Arthur Bernardes and Mata do Paraíso offer distinctive experiences of their own.

Architecture and Heritage Protection

Casa Arthur Bernardes was built in Viçosa between 1922 and 1926 in the eclectic style. Its state heritage listing was approved by State Decree No. 29,399 of April 21, 1989. The building was entered in both Heritage Register Book II for the Fine Arts and Heritage Register Book III for historic monuments, historic works of art, and paleographic or bibliographic documents. Its construction period, architecture and two listings give Casa Arthur Bernardes a clearly defined cultural and historical profile. Visiting hours are listed as Tuesday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. and 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Take these time slots into account when planning your visit and check them beforehand, as hours may change.

Forest Areas and Botanical Themes

Mata do Paraíso is an Atlantic Forest reserve in Viçosa. The forest fragment covers about 400 ha, of which 200 ha are part of the station. The area is in excellent condition and is home to numerous endangered animal and plant species. It also protects the headwaters of Córrego Santa Catarina, an important tributary of Ribeirão São Bartolomeu. Trails and an environmental education center are also part of the area. The two figures describe different scales: about 400 ha refers to the forest fragment, while 200 ha refers to the station’s share. This helps put the area’s size into perspective, while the information about species, waterways and environmental education provides additional context on its ecological focus.

Mata da Biologia, also known as Recanto das Cigarras, is located on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. This protected area is a biodiverse, naturally regenerating fragment of the Atlantic Forest. Its trails can be used for interpretive activities covering ecology, plants, animals and fungi. The topics therefore go beyond botany alone, encompassing different parts of the ecosystem. The Horto Botânico of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa has a botanical focus, with a collection of living native and introduced plants. In contrast, the trails of Mata da Biologia focus on several ecological themes, while the Horto Botânico’s collection brings together plants from different origins.

Museums on Campus

The Museu de Zoologia João Moojen in Viçosa was founded in 1933, based on a collection of various animals from the Brazilian fauna assembled by then-professor João Moojen. Its collection comprises more than 22,000 specimens, including reptiles, amphibians, birds, mammals and fossils. Some are on public display, including preserved and taxidermied animals from the Brazilian fauna. The founding year, collection size and variety of specimens illustrate both the museum’s institutional history and its broad natural history focus.

The Museu da Comunicação is a memory and experimentation center of the Department of Communication and Journalism on the campus of the Universidade Federal de Viçosa. It is open to visitors. Its focus differs from that of the zoological collection: memory and experimentation in communication and journalism take center stage here. If you would like to include the Museu da Comunicação in your plans, check the current visiting arrangements beforehand.

The sites can be distinguished by their subject matter: Casa Arthur Bernardes represents architecture and heritage protection, the Museu de Zoologia is home to an extensive collection of Brazilian fauna, and the Museu da Comunicação focuses on communication and memory. Nature is represented by several distinct highlights: the forest reserve, the ecology-focused trails of Mata da Biologia and the Horto Botânico’s living plant collection.
