Prados brings together church art, religious traditions, music and nature conservation. The reason for your trip can be a good starting point when choosing a hotel: a visit focused on Igreja Matriz calls for different priorities than a music program or the Serra de São José. The local churches, festivals and cultural institutions provide concrete ways to explore these themes.

Church Art and History in the Center

The historic center of Prados lies almost entirely between Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição and Capela de Nossa Senhora do Rosário dos Pretos. Igreja Matriz de Nossa Senhora da Conceição is an important landmark: construction began in 1715–1716, and IPHAN listed it for protection on December 6, 1996. The interior of the church is richly decorated with Rococo-style carvings and paintings. This building brings together its location in the historic center, its construction history, protected status and artistic decoration.

The Festa de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Prados also dates back to 1716. The similar dates refer to different things: 1715–1716 marks the start of the church’s construction, while 1716 marks the origin of the festival. A novena is held before the Festa. On the feast day, events include processions, a solemn Mass, an early-morning Alvorada and auctions.

Festivals and Musical Traditions

Boi Mofado is another form of public tradition. In the days before Carnival, it makes its way through the streets of Prados with musicians, revelers, people in masks and children. Thus, alongside the religious celebrations, there is a tradition featuring music and a diverse group of participants. For planning your trip, the timing is useful: Boi Mofado takes place in the days before Carnival, while the processions and Mass described above are part of the Festa’s feast day.

Lira Ceciliana is based in Prados and was founded in 1858. It maintains a choir, an orchestra, a band and a small school for early music education. Lira also offers free music lessons, concerts and similar performances in Prados. The Festival de Música de Prados is another facet of this musical tradition: Lira has organized it annually since 1977. The festival includes free courses and workshops in singing and in string and wind instruments; Prados is one of the festival venues. It helps to distinguish between the institution and the event: Lira brings together ensembles and musical activities, while the festival provides a distinct recurring framework for music and courses.

Serra de São José and Nature Conservation

The Serra de São José in Prados lies within the Área de Preservação Ambiental (APA) São José and the state-run Refúgio Estadual de Vida Silvestre Libélulas da Serra de São José. The Refúgio also includes the municipality of Prados. Its purpose is to preserve regional biodiversity, particularly the dragonfly fauna. This gives the nature-conservation perspective a specific focus: dragonflies are a particular priority alongside the broader goal of preserving the region’s biological diversity.

The Passeio à Serra de São José also has a set date: it takes place on the second Friday in July. In 2018, the Passeio was described as 150 years old. The Festival de Música de Prados, in turn, has been organized annually by Lira Ceciliana since 1977. Together, the music event and the Passeio offer different date markers for planning a trip, while the protected-area designation frames the Serra as a nature destination.

Choose the Reason for Your Hotel Search

For your trip to Prados, you can first decide whether you are more interested in church art and religious traditions, musical offerings or the Serra’s nature-conservation focus. The occasions also differ in their timing: the Festa is preceded by a novena, the music festival takes place annually, and the Passeio falls on the second Friday in July.
