Horácio Alves: Waterfalls and Trails Nearby
Accommodation in Horácio Alves
If you choose Horácio Alves as your destination, you can distinguish local route references from excursion destinations in the surrounding area. A route recorded in December 2023 between Horácio Alves and José Sebastião Leite is 60.73 kilometers long. Cachoeira Beija flor is listed as a point of interest along it. The route’s distance describes this connection between the two named places; it should not be confused with the shorter access road to the Canela de Ema complex.
Waterfalls and Trails Nearby
The Canela de Ema waterfall complex is located near Horácio Alves, in Capitólio. This destination includes waterfalls, water trails, and natural pools. Cachoeira No Limite is 50 meters from the restaurant and has a swimming pool. The waterfalls and pools can therefore be viewed as part of a larger destination, rather than equated with a single hiking route starting from Horácio Alves.
Trilha Verde takes about 20 minutes on foot through the water to a pool suitable for diving. On Trilha Alta, the canyoning route passes through four waterfalls. The two activities therefore differ in their specific focus: a roughly 20-minute water trail to a pool, or canyoning through several waterfalls. Since operations on Trilha Verde, as well as guides and equipment on Trilha Alta, may change, check these details in advance.
Getting There and Dining
Access to the Canela de Ema complex is via Rodovia MG-050 at kilometer 305. From there, a 3.5-kilometer unpaved road leads to the complex. Road conditions may change during rainy periods, so check them before setting out.
The Canela de Ema restaurant offers typical Minas Gerais dishes, as well as à la carte dishes and daily specials served in combinations. The menu and service may change. If dining there is important to your plans, check the current offerings in advance.
More Options in the Wider Destination of Capitólio
The wider destination of Capitólio also has natural attractions and viewpoints with different highlights. Mirante dos Canyons has a suspension bridge and a viewing platform overlooking the canyon. Ziplining over the canyon and rappelling down the quartzite walls are also offered there.
The Canyons de Furnas can be reached and visited by motorboat. Boat trips from the port on the Rio Turvo go into the canyons; visitors can swim in the reservoir’s waters. This boat trip thus combines views of the canyons with time on the water.
At Parque Ecoturístico Trilha do Sol, hiking trails lead to three main waterfalls: Cachoeira Poço Dourado, Cachoeira do Grito, and Cachoeira No Limite. Birdwatching is also possible there. Another option is Rota do Grotão, which is part of Capitólio’s municipal rural tourism program, Raízes do Campo. Visits to attractions along this route must be arranged in advance.
