Baependi: Churches, History and Waterfalls
Accommodation in Baependi
Baependi’s history is especially evident in its churches, religious art, and heritage preservation. The surrounding area also offers waterfalls and a circular hike in the mountains associated with Baependi. If you’re looking for a hotel in Baependi, you can use your travel interests as a starting point: architecture and church history on the one hand, nature destinations on the other.
Churches and Cultural Heritage in Baependi
The Matriz Nossa Senhora do Montserrat is closely linked to the founding of Baependi, one of the first settlements in southern Minas Gerais. Its carvings depict local flora and draw on European Neoclassical and Rococo influences. The combination of these motifs and styles gives it a character unique in Brazil. The church’s protection history also has two dates: IPHAN listed it as a heritage site in 1952; in April 1998, the municipality also protected it under Decree No. 372/1998.
The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was rebuilt in 1942 on the site of an earlier chapel. Nhá Chica’s tomb remained there; the church was inaugurated on June 14, 1945. Its construction history thus links the former chapel site with the rebuilding and later inauguration. The polychrome finish of an 18th-century image of Nossa Senhora do Rosário is attributed to Joaquim José Natividade.
The history of the Irmandade Nossa Senhora do Rosário includes its founding in 1820 by Black residents, after which construction of the church began. The Igreja Nossa Senhora do Rosário stands in the center of Praça Arthur Brasílio. It is a simple, spacious church and was listed as a heritage site under Decree No. 516/2003. The church’s construction history, location on the square, and protected status can thus be considered separately.
Another church with its own history is the Igreja Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte, on Praça Argentino Rios. It is associated with the Irmandade da Boa Morte, founded in 1832 by descendants of enslaved people. The church was protected under Decree No. 517/2003. The churches of Nossa Senhora do Rosário and Nossa Senhora da Boa Morte are therefore connected to different brotherhood histories and each has its own protection decree.
Usina Velha and the History of Electricity Supply
The Usina do Ribeirão, also known as Usina Velha, is located in the municipality of Baependi. It was the first power plant serving the municipalities of Baependi and Caxambu. It was inaugurated on June 22, 1911, and used water from the Ribeirão de Furnas. The plant’s history adds a chapter on local energy supply to the area’s religious and architectural heritage. One description mentioned tours that required an appointment in advance. Check current visiting arrangements before you travel.
Waterfalls and Hiking
Cachoeira do Juju is located in the municipality of Baependi. It has a drop of 130 meters and natural pools for swimming. A 14-kilometer circular hike to Cachoeira do Juju is offered in the mountains associated with Baependi. The waterfall’s height and the length of the loop describe different aspects of the destination: one highlights the natural feature of the waterfall, while the other refers to the hiking route.
Cachoeira do Moinho is 11 kilometers from the city of Baependi and is considered a place to swim and cool off. The geographical descriptions use different reference points: Cachoeira do Juju is located in the municipality of Baependi, while the distance from the city of Baependi is given for Cachoeira do Moinho. The description of Juju also specifies its drop and natural swimming pools.
Baependi thus brings together several possible travel themes without requiring the same itinerary: its churches offer distinct architectural and brotherhood histories, the Usina do Ribeirão represents early electricity generation, and the waterfalls add a natural perspective on the municipality and its surroundings.
