Caxambu brings together natural heritage in the form of mineral water springs, viewpoints and a diverse architectural and cultural history. When planning your stay, you can weigh these highlights against one another: Parque das Águas is known for its springs and intangible cultural heritage, while Morro Caxambu offers panoramic views. Churches, squares and historic buildings add further cultural highlights, as do traveling exhibitions and a market held on Saturdays.

Mineral Water and Landscape

Parque das Águas de Caxambu is a municipal tourist attraction and a natural heritage site. It is home to twelve mineral water springs with therapeutic properties. The collection of mineral waters in the park has also been registered as intangible cultural heritage: a decree signed on February 23, 2021, recognized it as cultural and intangible heritage. The park thus combines a natural highlight with a cultural connection.

Views from Morro Caxambu

Morro Caxambu is 1,090 meters high and offers panoramic views of the city. At its summit stands the Cristo-Redentor monument, a 15-meter-high statue. You can also take a cable car to the top: the Teleférico runs from near Parque das Águas to the summit and offers panoramic views of the park.

Another way to experience the landscape is the Caminho das Águas. The route starts on Rua Monsenhor João de Deus and follows the Morro trail to a viewpoint. It is designed as an ecological walk. This means you can choose between a cable car ride with views of the park and a route specifically designed as a walk. Both options lead to Morro, but differ in the type of route.

Architecture and Heritage Protection

Igreja Santa Isabel da Hungria is a neo-Gothic church. It was consecrated in 1897; in 1978, IEPHA placed it under heritage protection through Decree No. 19.513 of October 26. Praça 16 de Setembro is also protected: IEPHA designated it a protected site on March 1, 1999, followed later by Caxambu’s municipal heritage council.

Balneário Hidroterápico adds a neoclassical building to these architectural examples. It was built at the beginning of the 20th century and is richly adorned with French stained-glass windows. The church and Balneário showcase two different architectural styles, while the Praça illustrates the history of heritage protection in Caxambu.

Historic Buildings and Culture

The historic building that houses Museu Histórico e Genealógico de Caxambu was built in 1896 to accommodate water tanks. These supplied the city for decades. The museum’s architectural history is thus directly connected to a former function in the city’s water supply. The museum organizes traveling exhibitions in collaboration with other museums. If you would like to visit an exhibition, check the dates in advance.

The former railway station has also found a new cultural use: it was revitalized in 2019 and converted into Centro Cultural Estação Ferroviária. Together with the museum, it shows how historic buildings in Caxambu are connected to culture, while their original functions remain part of their history.

Plan for Feira Sabor e Arte

Feira Sabor e Arte takes place on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Praça 16 de Setembro. Offerings include jellies, bread, herbs, craft beer and handmade snacks. If you want to include the market in your day’s plans, check the date and times in advance, as recurring market details may change.
