Cristiano Otoni connects an important highway route with spots along the Rio Paraopeba and buildings of religious or railway-historical significance. To get your bearings, you can use specific landmarks: the BR-040, waterfalls and the river’s source, or churches, the railway station and a traditional festival.

Highway connections and getting your bearings

The BR-040, also called Rodovia Presidente Juscelino Kubitschek, runs through Cristiano Otoni. It provides road connections to places including Conselheiro Lafaiete, Barbacena, Belo Horizonte, Juiz de Fora and Rio de Janeiro. This makes the BR-040 a specific point of reference for your journey; the places named give you an idea of the connections that run from Cristiano Otoni.

Spots along the Rio Paraopeba

Several destinations bring the Rio Paraopeba into view, but in different ways: Cachoeira da Usina is fed directly by the river, while Cachoeira do Paraíso is fed by its tributaries. Cachoeira da Usina is beside the road connecting the municipal seat with the district of São Caetano, near Bairro Pinheiros. Its location can therefore be identified by this road connection and the neighborhood.

The main source of the Rio Paraopeba is also in Cristiano Otoni, in the locality of Paineiras; it is considered easy to access. Cachoeira do Paraíso is described as being in a different location: it is on private property, about five kilometers from the municipal seat and about one kilometer from the road to the district of São Caetano. The two distances refer to different reference points. Take the private-property status into account when planning your visit.

Cachoeira do Balneário offers another specific point of reference: the waterfall is about 2.5 meters high, and its pool is 2 meters deep. Nearby are the ruins of an old mill that once supplied the locality with energy. There is also a restaurant and a snack bar at the waterfall. Check whether both are open before your visit.

Churches, railway station and traditional festival

Nossa Senhora da Guia was Cristiano Otoni’s first patron saint. The Capela de Nossa Senhora da Guia was built in the 1940s and completed in 1947. Another religious landmark is the Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Engenho Velho: the building dates from the 19th century and stands along the Estrada Real route. The Caminho Novo of the Estrada Real passes in front of this church. The district of São Caetano also has a 19th-century church, the Igreja de São Caetano.

The Estação Ferroviária de Cristiano Otoni is also part of the town’s architectural history. Its building was constructed in 1892 and is protected as municipal historical and cultural heritage. Together with the churches, the railway station represents another historical focus; Cachoeira do Balneário adds the remains of the former energy supply to the town’s history.

The Festa de Santo Antônio is also a recurring event to consider when planning your trip. It takes place every year on the days leading up to June 13 and on June 13 itself. Festivities include shows, market stalls and quadrilhas. If you would like to plan your trip around this period, check the event dates in advance.
