When planning a trip to Capitólio, you can distinguish between central locations, nature and activity destinations within the municipality, and other attractions in the wider destination. The following places and activities provide concrete points of reference for your planning.

Getting your bearings downtown and in the municipality

In downtown Capitólio are Praia Artificial Domingos Gonçalves Machado and Igreja de São Sebastião. They offer two concrete points of reference for a stay focused on the downtown area. Morro do Chapéu, in the municipality, offers a different focus: it is the most traditional tourist attraction in the municipality of Capitólio, and the source of the Ambrósio is also located there. This puts central locations and a landscape-focused destination side by side as different options for planning your trip.

Canyons, waterfalls and trails

The Canyons de Furnas, in the municipality of Capitólio, have waterfalls over 30 meters high that visitors can reach. The canyons can also be explored by lancha or chalana boats departing from the port on the Rio Turvo. Visitors can travel into the canyons and swim in the reservoir. The waterfalls and boat trip offer different highlights: one focuses on the height of the waterfalls, the other on traveling through the canyons and the chance to swim. Since operating conditions can vary, it is a good idea to check the specific conditions before setting out on a tour.

At Cachoeira da Capivara, in the municipality of Capitólio, visitors can reach waterfalls and swimming pools via moderately challenging trails. This is a different way to access the area than by boat to the canyons: the trails are classified as moderately challenging, while the boat tour enters the canyons from the water. Another rural tourism option is the Rota do Grotão, which is part of the municipal Raízes do Campo program. Visits to attractions along the route must be arranged in advance; factor this requirement into your plans.

More destinations in the Capitólio destination area

In the wider Capitólio destination area, Mirante dos Canyons features a suspension bridge and a viewing platform above the canyon. Ziplining across the canyon and rappelling down the quartzite walls are also offered there. Parque Ecoturístico Trilha do Sol offers a different focus: its trails lead to the three main waterfalls, Cachoeira Poço Dourado, Cachoeira do Grito and Cachoeira No Limite; birdwatching is also possible there. This lets you choose between views and high-altitude activities at Mirante and hiking trails and birdwatching at Trilha do Sol.

The Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is part of the historical and cultural heritage of the municipality of Capitólio. The wider natural area is also part of the region’s context: according to Decree No. 70.355 of April 3, 1972, part of the municipality of Capitólio lies within the estimated 200,000-hectare area of Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra. These cultural and landscape connections complement the central locations and specific nature activities within the municipality, without sharing the same focus.
