Joanésia can be explored through its connections to water and the history of its churches. This provides a clear thematic framework for planning your trip: rivers and reservoirs place the town in its landscape, while its architectural history spans several distinct periods. The route via the MG-232 and a municipal holiday in August are also useful points to consider when planning the timing and practical details of your visit.

Reservoirs and the river region

The Santo Antônio Reservoir is located in Joanésia, Dores de Guanhães and Ferros. On its right bank it borders Joanésia, while the left bank borders Ferros. These descriptions of the banks provide a specific geographical reference to the municipalities involved.

The settlement of Ponte Santo Antônio belongs to Joanésia and lies along the southern section of the Salto Grande Reservoir, in the area where flow is reduced. Ponte Santo Antônio is the name of the settlement, while Salto Grande is the name of the reservoir. The original church and settlement of Joanésia were located near the Rio Santo Antônio.

The Porto Estrela Hydroelectric Power Plant (UHE) is also located on the Rio Santo Antônio, in the Rio Doce watershed. The facility occupies land in Joanésia, Braúnas and Açucena. The river’s name therefore appears both in historical references to the area and in the geographical description of the facility.

Churches and local history

The São Sebastião Parish Church was built in the Baroque style between 1923 and 1924. This earlier building was demolished in the 1970s. The present church was built in a new style and renovated several times afterward. Local history thus encompasses both the construction period of the former church and the later construction and renovation of the present one.

The Nossa Senhora do Rosário Church was built in 1872 in the Baroque style. After renovation in 1915, it served as the parish church. Its construction and use provide a different historical reference from the building phases of São Sebastião.

The Capela Mortuária is also part of the local heritage history: the city government designated it as a protected heritage site because of its cultural significance to the city. Together, these examples show different aspects of Joanésia’s architectural heritage—from historic church buildings to municipal protection of a culturally significant building.

Getting there and travel dates

The route from Ipatinga to Joanésia is 51 km long and follows the MG-232 through Santana do Paraíso and Mesquita. A route description published in 2023 describes the road as narrow, paved and very well maintained. Check current road conditions before setting out.

On February 6, 2026, the engineering project for the rehabilitation of the MG-232 section between Braúnas, Joanésia, Mesquita, Santana do Paraíso and Ipatinga was completed. This project update, with its specific date, complements the route description; the towns named indicate the section covered by the project.

A municipal law passed in 2013 established August 15 as a holiday for the Assumption of Our Lady. If your stay falls on this date, check in advance for current dates and events.

Minas Gerais in the broader context

Across the wider destination of Minas Gerais, 94 protected areas safeguard almost two million hectares across the three biomes of the Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga. Tourism is established in 17 state nature parks. Recognition of cultural heritage also applies to Minas Gerais as a whole: the craft of bell ringers and the traditional production of Minas cheese are recognized as Brazilian cultural heritage. These statewide details provide a broader natural and cultural context for understanding Joanésia.
