São Domingos do Prata: Nature, Culture and Tradition
Accommodation in São Domingos do Prata
In São Domingos do Prata, nature and culture coexist with distinct accents. Mountains and landforms shape the landscape, and the Rio Prata flows through the municipality; at the same time, the Guarda de Congo Nossa Senhora do Rosário can still be seen in the streets. This combination of striking natural features and living tradition gives the municipality its own character.
Natural Features and Cycling Route
Cachoeira do Prequete, also known as Cachoeira do Alfié, has a free fall of 30 meters. In its upper section, flowing water stretches for 1 kilometer. Pedra do Cachorro offers a different glimpse into the history of nature: it got its name from its shape, formed by nature over centuries. At the waterfall, the stated measurements stand out; at Pedra do Cachorro, it is the long process of natural formation.
For cyclists, the Vales dos Tropeiros tourist cycling route is another point of interest. It is about 196 kilometers long and connects São Domingos do Prata with Antônio Dias, Dionísio, Marliéria and Timóteo. This brings together different scales: individual natural attractions in the municipality and a route connecting five municipalities. São Domingos do Prata is also part of the Mata Atlântica de Minas Tourist Circuit.
Traditions and Events
The Guarda de Congo Nossa Senhora do Rosário is one of the oldest religious and cultural expressions in São Domingos do Prata and can still be seen in the municipality’s streets today. In 2017, it was registered as intangible cultural heritage of São Domingos do Prata, under registration No. 001/2017 in the Register of Expressions and Decree No. 058/2017.
The annual Festa de Nossa Senhora do Rosário takes place in the districts and villages of São Domingos do Prata, as well as at the municipal seat. The celebration is held there in October. If you want to plan your trip around the Festa, check the specific date in advance.
The Festival Gastronômico is also highlighted among the cultural events. The range of cultural themes therefore extends from religious and traditional expressions to a gastronomic festival.
Cultural Sites in the Town Center
Igreja de Nossa Senhora do Rosário stands on a hill in downtown São Domingos do Prata. Grupo Escolar Cônego João Pio is one of the municipality’s most traditional heritage properties. The two sites reflect different aspects of its cultural history: a church in a central hillside location and a building recognized as heritage.
Casa da Cultura is a free cultural space open to the local community. As part of its cultural education program, it offers students aged 8 and older classes in guitar, keyboard, percussion and choral singing. Casa do Artesão is affiliated with Casa da Cultura. Together, these provide a cultural space, a range of classes and an institutional link to handicrafts.
