Capitólio: Canyons, Water and Nature Experiences
Accommodation in Capitólio
Discover Capitólio through several distinct nature and cultural themes: the Furnas Canyons, a viewpoint with activities along the rock walls, waterfall trails and local cultural heritage. Choosing which of these perspectives to focus on can give your trip planning a clear direction.
Canyons, Viewpoint and Reservoir
The Furnas Canyons near Capitólio feature quartzite walls ranging from 20 to 60 metres high. This height range gives a concrete idea of the scale of these rock formations.
At Mirante dos Canyons, a suspension bridge and viewing platform sit above the canyon. Zip-lining across the canyon and rappelling down the quartzite walls are offered there. The viewpoint and activities along the rock walls offer different focal points: you can visit the viewpoint for views across the canyon or take an interest in the activities on offer there.
Motorboats provide access to the Furnas Canyons and allow visitors to explore inside them. On a boat trip from the port on the Rio Turvo, visitors can enter the canyons and swim in the reservoir. Alongside the experiences at Mirante, a trip into the canyons and swimming in the reservoir are also specific activities to choose from.
Hiking Trails, Waterfalls and Birdwatching
Parque Ecoturístico Trilha do Sol offers hiking trails to three main waterfalls: Cachoeira Poço Dourado, Cachoeira do Grito and Cachoeira No Limite. Birdwatching is also possible in the same park. The excursion options can be distinguished by their focus: at Mirante, the emphasis is on views and activities along the quartzite walls; on the water, it is on canyon trips and swimming; and at Trilha do Sol, it is on hiking trails to waterfalls and nature observation.
Rural Tourism and Cultural Heritage
Rota do Grotão is part of Capitólio’s Raízes do Campo municipal rural tourism programme. Visits to attractions along the route must be arranged in advance. Confirm your appointment before visiting and take it into account when planning.
The municipality’s historical and cultural heritage is also part of Capitólio’s travel experience: Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião is part of this heritage. For your planning, it serves as a cultural point of interest alongside the municipality’s nature and activity themes.
Capitólio in Its Regional Context
According to Decree No. 70.355 of 3 April 1972, part of the municipality of Capitólio lies within the estimated 200,000-hectare area of Parque Nacional da Serra da Canastra. Capitólio also belongs to the Circuito Turístico Nascentes das Gerais. The following municipalities are also part of this tourist circuit: Carmo do Rio Claro, Cássia, Delfinópolis, Guapé, Ibiraci, Itaú de Minas, Passos, Pratápolis and São João Batista do Glória.
Minas Gerais, the wider destination, offers another landscape setting: the state’s 94 protected areas safeguard almost 2 million hectares across the three biomes of Atlantic Forest, Cerrado and Caatinga. Tourism is established in 17 natural parks in Minas Gerais. The state also offers cultural and gastronomic points of interest: bell-ringers’ craft and the artisanal production of Minas cheese are recognised there as Brazilian cultural heritage. These themes complement trip planning across Minas Gerais, while the canyons, waterfalls and cultural sites mentioned above focus on Capitólio.
