The name Mato Verde refers to the local vegetation, which stays green throughout the year. Waterfalls, viewpoints and traces of the town’s early history give a stay here a range of possible focuses.

Waterfalls and Viewpoints

When water levels are high, Cachoeira Maria Rosa can reach a drop of about 90 meters, usually between June and October. Water flow varies from year to year, so this period is a guide, not a guarantee of specific conditions.

The route from Mato Verde to Cachoeira Maria Rosa follows the road through the municipality of Melancias and is 12 kilometers long in total. Check route conditions and signage before setting out. Free parking for cars and motorcycles is available near the waterfall; check parking arrangements locally, as they may change.

Poço do Ouro is about 200 meters above Cachoeira Maria Rosa. The trail there is considered moderately difficult, with steep sections that climb noticeably. Cachoeira Véu de Noiva lies beside Cachoeira Maria Rosa in a more secluded setting and can be reached by a hiking trail.

At Poço da Prata, two small waterfalls create a peaceful setting for enjoying nature. Mirante São Bento offers a different perspective: from one of the town’s higher points, the panoramic view stretches across Mato Verde; the viewpoint is also a good spot to watch the sunset.

Local History and Culture

The settlement that developed into Mato Verde was established in 1872 at the initiative of Bishop D. João Antônio dos Santos. Mud-brick houses and other traditional architectural features, preserved in Praça Capitão Possidônio Silveira, are connected with the town’s early history.

Casa da Cultura is a public space dedicated to preserving the history and collective memory of Mato Verde. Igreja de Pimpinha is also part of the town’s cultural landscape: it is regarded as a public and cultural heritage site of Mato Verde.

The Santo Antônio de Pádua festival is considered an annual tradition in Mato Verde, with records dating back to 1883. If you plan to time your trip around the festival, check the dates in advance.

Market and Cachaça Tradition

On market days, Mercado Municipal Antônio Barbosa Neto offers regional products, including handmade sweets, honey, Minas cheese, requeijão, pequi oil and traditional Cerrado fruits. The selection brings together local produce and products that are part of Mato Verde’s culinary character.

Alambique Siderite preserves a cachaça-making tradition passed down through generations since the 1950s. Visits are available by appointment. You can learn about the artisanal production process and the history of the family that runs the distillery; products are available for purchase on site. Confirm your appointment before traveling there.

Walking and Cycling

Pista José Péricles Custódio Jorge, also known as Zé do Correio, is used for cycling and walking. Together with the trails to the waterfalls, it offers different ways to explore Mato Verde on foot or by bike. When planning, it is worth considering the requirements of each route separately: the trail to Poço do Ouro is described as moderately difficult, with steep climbs, while Cachoeira Véu de Noiva is simply described as accessible by a hiking trail.
