Ouro Preto Between World Heritage, Art and Nature
Accommodation in Ouro Preto
On September 5, 1980, the historic city of Ouro Preto became the first Brazilian cultural heritage site to be added to the World Heritage List. Its heritage reveals itself in different ways: from the history of the InconfidĂŞncia Mineira to church art, collections and nature parks. You can plan your trip around the subjects that interest you most.
World Heritage, City History and Art
Praça Tiradentes is considered the city’s most iconic postcard view and a starting point for exploring Ouro Preto’s historic center. To get your bearings at this well-known square, combine a city walk with the historic and cultural themes that shape Ouro Preto.
The Museu da Inconfidência opened in 1944 in the former Casa de Câmara e Cadeia de Ouro Preto. It was intended to preserve, study and present objects and documents relating to the Inconfidência Mineira. Its collection comprises 4,000 historical and artistic objects. Those interested in the history of the Inconfidência Mineira can explore it through tangible objects and documents; the collection brings together both historical and artistic holdings.
Aleijadinho’s art offers another point of interest. Among the works attributed to Aleijadinho, the Museu Aleijadinho displays wooden leões de essa, a polychrome soapstone figure of SĂŁo Francisco de Paula and the Crucificado. The display may change. The Igreja de SĂŁo Francisco de Assis is also one of Aleijadinho’s significant works and contains paintings by Mestre AtaĂde. The examples in the museum and church show different aspects of the art associated with Aleijadinho.
Admission to the BasĂlica de Nossa Senhora do Pilar also allows visitors to visit the Museu de Arte Sacra in the building’s basement. As visitor arrangements may change, it is worth checking them before your visit. The Museu Boulieu – Caminhos da FĂ© has a collection of more than 2,000 pieces assembled by Maria Helena and Jacques Boulieu. Educational and entertainment offerings introduce visitors to history and culture; the specific program may change.
Planning Nature Parks and Activities
Parque Natural Municipal das Andorinhas combines several natural features and leisure activities. It has waterfalls, natural pools and viewpoints, as well as barbecue areas, sports courts and sport climbing. Park facilities may change; check conditions before your visit. Another historic green space is Parque Natural Municipal Horto dos Contos. Founded in 1799, it includes Brazil’s second-oldest botanical garden. The two parks have different focuses: Andorinhas combines landscape features with leisure activities, while Horto dos Contos has its own historical dimension, with its founding story and botanical garden.
The history of mining is also part of planning your trip. Ouro Preto’s gold mines illustrate how gold was extracted during the colonial period. Mina do Chico Rei offers a two- to four-hour guided tour through additional mine tunnels, with detailed explanations. Tour offerings and duration may change, so check in advance whether the tour suits your travel dates. Set aside a dedicated block of time for a tour like this rather than treating it as a brief stop.
Semana Santa in Ouro Preto is marked by processions, concerts and traditional ornamental carpets created on the streets of the historic center. If your trip falls during this period, the carpets and events can be a special focus; the annual program may vary. For a different kind of activity, the Caminhos de SĂŁo Tiago route starts in the municipality of Ouro Preto and leads to SĂŁo Tiago. It can be traveled on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, by vehicle or by motorcycle. These different ways of getting around give you several options for planning the route.
Getting There and the Regional Perspective
Ouro Preto can be reached by car via the BR-040 and BR-356 highways. Bus services connect Ouro Preto with Belo Horizonte; as schedules may change, check current services before setting out. When choosing a hotel, it helps to first decide whether your priorities are city history, church art, nature or longer activities. This lets you tailor your stay to the experiences you want to make time for.
In the wider region, the Rota TurĂstica Jaguara passes through rural areas in the municipalities of Itabirito, Rio Acima, Ouro Preto and Santa Bárbara. Among other things, the circular route offers local cuisine prepared for visitors.
