Engenheiro Correia combines a rich railway history with churches, a rural landscape and local festival traditions. If you are looking for a hotel for a stay here, these themes can help guide your plans: Would you like to explore the town’s history, get to know the landscape around Santo Antônio do Monte, or plan your visit around a religious celebration?

Railway and Church History

Engenheiro Correia developed in the 19th century as a result of the railway and features distinctive railway architecture. The station opened in 1896 as part of the Estrada de Ferro D. Pedro II; construction of the railway had begun in 1855. The dates mark different stages: 1855 marks the start of railway construction, while 1896 marks the station’s opening. In its heyday, it was the town’s social and economic center.

The religious buildings also offer insight into the town’s history. The architectural style of the Capela de São José suggests that it was probably built in the mid-19th century. The Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Conceição was built around 1940 because the previous church could no longer accommodate all the worshippers. The evidence regarding their construction histories therefore differs: the chapel’s date is probable and based on its style, while the reason for building the church is documented.

The Landscape Around Santo AntĂ´nio do Monte

Santo AntĂ´nio do Monte began as a settlement near what is now the center of Engenheiro Correia. It lies in the highest part of the town and offers a view of the valley. Old farms characterize Engenheiro Correia; the surrounding forests are known for the frequent presence of small birds. The landscape thus combines its elevated location with a rural character.

In Santo AntĂ´nio do Monte, the remains of several extensive dry-stone walls can be seen; they once marked the boundaries of the surrounding farms. The view of the valley and the walls show different aspects of the landscape: the elevated setting on the one hand, and the former farm boundaries on the other.

Religious Festival Traditions

A celebration in honor of Nossa Senhora is traditionally held in Engenheiro Correia in August, alongside the festivities for Sagrado Coração de Jesus. The Festa de São José is preceded by novenas, masses, market stalls and auctions. If you would like to plan your trip around a celebration, check the specific event dates in advance.

Ouro Preto as a Wider Travel Destination

Ouro Preto also has its own historical context. On September 5, 1980, the city became the first Brazilian cultural property to be added to the UNESCO World Heritage List. The Museu da Inconfidência opened in 1944 in the former Casa de Câmara e Cadeia in Ouro Preto to preserve, research and present objects and documents related to the Inconfidência Mineira. Its collection includes 4,000 historical and artistic objects.
