Itaguara – Heritage, Folia de Reis and Cachoeira da Pataca
Accommodation in Itaguara
When choosing a place to stay, it helps to distinguish between a destination’s different themes. Itaguara offers specific points of interest: the town’s history at the Museu Sagarana, protected heritage, Folia de Reis, and natural attractions in the surrounding area. Cachoeira da Pataca is 4 km from the center; the churches, chapel and museum each offer a different historical perspective.
Churches and protected heritage
In the 2026 ICMS-Patrimônio-Cultural cycle, Igreja Matriz Nossa Senhora das Dores is part of Itaguara’s protected heritage; its protection status is linked to Decreto n°630/2001. Construction of the church began on April 9, 1887, and it was blessed in May 1889. The start of construction and the blessing mark two different dates in its building history.
Capela Nossa Senhora da Conceição in Pará dos Vilelas is also part of Itaguara’s protected heritage as part of the 2026 ICMS-Patrimônio-Cultural cycle; the basis is a decree dated June 28, 2001. Conjunto Paisagístico do Engenho Velho complements the buildings with a landscape ensemble. It is a protected landscape covering 4.04 hectares and is linked to Decreto n°973/2009. Local heritage protection therefore encompasses churches, a chapel and a clearly identified landscape.
Museum and cultural traditions
Museu Sagarana is a municipal public institution. Its catalogued collection documents and preserves Itaguara’s history and includes objects and documents from the municipal public archive. The collection also includes personal belongings and letters of the writer João Guimarães Rosa, who lived in the municipality in the 1930s. Municipal records and personal accounts of an author connected with Itaguara are brought together here.
Folia de Reis
Folia de Reis in Itaguara was recognized by the Conselho Estadual do Patrimônio Cultural de Minas Gerais as intangible cultural heritage of the state and included in the “Folias de Minas” dossier in 2017. This adds a different form of cultural tradition to the architectural and landscape heritage. Unlike the protected sites, Folia de Reis is recognized as intangible cultural heritage at the state level in Minas Gerais.
Landscape and getting around
Cachoeira da Pataca is 4 km from the center of Itaguara, at the exit toward Crucilândia via MG-040. The waterfall is approximately 3 meters high. The waterfall is therefore a nearby destination, and its height provides a specific measurement.
Pontilhão do Pará dos Vilelas dates from the mid-20th century and is used for fishing. It combines a historic bridge with a specific use, making it a different local point of interest from the heritage sites and landscape features mentioned above.
