Diamantina: Historic Center, Architecture and Cultural Heritage
Accommodation in Diamantina
Diamantina combines a historic center on the side of a steep valley with architecture, the history of gold and diamond mining, and nature and cultural heritage destinations in the surrounding area. If you’re looking for a hotel, you can plan your stay around these highlights: the townscape, the city’s history and the individual nearby destinations offer different themes for your trip.
Historic Center and Baroque Architecture
Diamantina’s Historic Center rises 150 m along the side of a steep valley. Its winding, uneven streets follow the natural topography. The elevation and street layout are therefore integral to the townscape and shape the impression created by the historic buildings.
Baroque architecture is characterized by wooden structures and geometric details. It also features regularly arranged houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, colorful facades and gray cobbled streets that also follow the topography. The character of the center can therefore be seen in more than just individual houses: the interplay of buildings, colors, paving and terrain is also part of its architectural character.
Protected Landscape and Nearby Destinations
The Cristais Mountains are protected as a natural heritage site and are considered an inseparable part of the historic site of Diamantina. Temporary protection was approved on December 14, 2000, and permanent protection on November 19, 2010. Both their protected status and their relationship to the historic site are therefore important to understanding the landscape.
Gruta do Salitre is 9 km from Diamantina. Its features include quartzite rock formations, an archaeological site and rock walls up to 80 m high. This destination brings together geological formations and archaeological heritage.
Parque Estadual do Biribiri is 15 km from Diamantina and has several waterfalls and numerous rock inscriptions. Vila de Biribiri is also 15 km away. Its preserved church and the factory workers’ homes form an architectural ensemble recognized by IEPHA. The two places therefore offer different highlights: the park features waterfalls and rock inscriptions, while the church and workers’ homes form the ensemble in Vila de Biribiri.
Museum, Mining History and Chica da Silva
Founded in 1954, Museu do Diamante preserves and presents the history of Diamantina, formerly Arraial do Tijuco, and the developments that shaped the city. Gold and diamond mining are a particular focus. The museum offers its own perspective on the history echoed in the name Diamantina.
The collection and team of Museu do Diamante are temporarily housed in Casa da Chica da Silva. The museum’s institutional, educational and cultural activities, as well as a permanent exhibition, are held there until its historic premises are restored. As this arrangement is temporary and may change, check the latest information before your trip.
Casa da Chica da Silva was Chica da Silva’s residence from 1763 to 1771 and houses a collection of paintings depicting her. The historic house and the museum’s temporary quarters share the same location, but remain distinct aspects of its history: the house’s connection to Chica da Silva and the museum’s institutional work.
Traces of the Former Railway and a Memorial
Trilha Verde da Maria Fumaça runs along the former railway branch that connected Corinto with Diamantina. The line was laid in 1909, opened in 1914 and completely closed in 1973. These dates place the railway connection in context and distinguish its construction, opening and closure.
Memorial do Tropeiro e do Ferreiro is located in Mercado Velho. A municipal report dated April 22, 2024, described it as a tourist attraction. If you’re planning a visit, check locally for current visitor information.
