Serra do Cabral is considered Lassance’s main attraction. Waterfalls, canyons, caves, veredas and small streams shape its landscape, which is also home to rich biodiversity. The Memorial, railway station and local festivals offer other ways to explore the area. To plan your trip, it’s worth first deciding whether nature, history or cultural traditions will be your main focus.

Nature and activities at Serra do Cabral

Serra do Cabral offers activities such as rappelling, canyoning, cascading and trekking, as well as swimming in the pools formed by its waterfalls. The options range from exploring the terrain to experiences involving rock and water. When planning your time in Lassance, you can use these different focuses to guide your choice of activities. The variety of the landscape goes hand in hand with a specific range of nature experiences.

Another natural highlight is Cachoeira do Nozão, a major natural attraction in Lassance. It received one of the first information signs on Lassance’s tourist routes. The waterfall and sign represent both the natural landscape and the local tourist information.

Buildings and cultural memories

The Carlos Chagas Memorial is housed in the building where Carlos Chagas’s laboratory was once located. This former use gives the Memorial a specific historical connection: the site is linked to the former laboratory, not merely to the name Carlos Chagas. A municipal announcement dated June 13, 2025, listed opening hours as daily, including weekends, from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Check the current hours before your arrival.

Casa de Saúde Carlos Chagas is also one of Lassance’s protected buildings. It is protected as a listed building because of its cultural significance. The waters of the Rio das Velhas in Lassance offer another perspective on the area’s history and are associated with memories of muleteers. Together, these places and connections represent different cultural and historical facets of Lassance.

Railway station, cycling route and local festivals

A cycling tour inspired by Guimarães Rosa passed through Lassance. The cyclists visited the rural community of Santa Rita, veredas, mountains, local farms and the town’s historic railway station. Lassance railway station was handed over after its restoration in 2016.

The Festa de São Sebastião in Lassance includes the handover of the Folias de São Sebastião and shared traditional dishes. These include Boi no rolete, Porco no rolete and churrasco. The Feira Cultural brings together local associations, merchants and producers and offers typical dishes. While the festival highlights the Folias and the named dishes, the Feira puts the participation of local groups and vendors in the foreground.
