Itabira offers several themes to explore during a stay: literary heritage, historic buildings, a textile tradition and nature. These different focuses can help you plan your trip around your interests.

Memorial and Historic Buildings

The Carlos Drummond de Andrade Memorial was inaugurated in 1998; its original architectural design was by Oscar Niemeyer. The collection includes extensive correspondence between the writer and his mother, as well as his daughter Maria Julieta. Photographs, documents and dedications complement these letters. The Memorial offers insight into the writer through his correspondence and other personal and documentary records. This makes it especially interesting if you are interested not only in literature but also in the personal relationships documented there.

The Museu Histórico de Itabira is housed in a manor built in the early 19th century. Together with the Memorial, inaugurated in 1998, it offers a clear contrast in periods: one is an early historic building, the other a commemorative site inaugurated later. Dating from the late 19th century, the Casa de Drummond provides another historic reference point.

The Fazenda do Pontal is notable for its reconstruction, carried out in 2004 using the house’s original windows, doors and doorframes. Its history of reconstruction therefore includes specific building elements as well as a date. The Casa do Brás, meanwhile, houses the permanent exhibition “Foto-Viagem nos Tempos do Mato-Dentro.” If you plan to visit this exhibition, check before your visit whether it is still on display.

Cultural Tradition and Visit Planning

On Tuesday afternoons, embroiderers work and talk in the courtyard of the Casa de Drummond. In their work, they weave together poems, stories and life experiences. If you are interested in this tradition, check in advance whether it will take place on your planned visit day.

Visits to the Fazenda do Pontal are scheduled Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., and on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Check the hours before setting out. This lets you plan your day around the stated visiting hours while keeping the other historic sites in mind.

Nature and Free Flight

The Parque Natural Municipal do Intelecto is centrally located in Itabira and features preserved vegetation from the Atlantic Forest region. This includes jatobá, sapucaia and braúna trees. These named species give the nature theme a specific focus: you can appreciate the park not only as a natural area but also through its characteristic vegetation.

Pico do Amor is an environmental protection area used for contemplative recreation. This is a different way to experience nature from seeing the preserved vegetation and tree species at the Parque Natural Municipal do Intelecto. If you are more interested in free flight, there are two launch ramps in the Serra dos Doze in Itabira. Pilots should check the local operating conditions.

When deciding on your trip, you can distinguish between the themes: collections and correspondence, architectural and reconstruction history, nature, or free flight.
