City history and cultural connections

Two distinct themes stand out in Ituiutaba: the city’s history and cultural traditions on the one hand, and native Cerrado vegetation within the city on the other. The Galeria de Antiguidade and MUSAI focus on the city’s history, while Parque do Goiabal adds a municipal natural area to these themes. This can help you decide whether cultural attractions, landscape, or both are most important for your trip.

The Galeria de Antiguidade de Ituiutaba has an area dedicated to people who have shaped Ituiutaba’s history. It therefore focuses on the role of individuals in the local historical narrative. MUSAI – Museu de Artes de Ituiutaba was founded to tell the city’s history; its collection includes antiques, photographs, objects, and documents. The two institutions thus have different emphases: the Galeria focuses on influential individuals, while MUSAI presents a collection of different types of historical artifacts.

Another cultural landmark is Praça Treze de Maio. The square is home to a monument honoring Zumbi dos Palmares, and Igreja São Benedito is opposite it. A 2020 UFU article states that the Festa do Congado de Ituiutaba is usually held on the third Sunday in May at Praça Treze de Maio. If you are planning your trip around this event, check the current dates in advance.

Companhia de Reis de Ituiutaba is based at Praça 3 in the Bairro Ipiranga and is part of the Folias de Minas. According to Iepha-MG, it was registered because of its cultural importance to the state. This adds another named cultural connection alongside Congado. The Companhia and the Festa differ both in their association with the Folias de Minas and in the locations mentioned: Praça 3 in Bairro Ipiranga is given for the group, and Praça Treze de Maio for the Festa.

Parque do Goiabal and Cerrado vegetation

Parque do Goiabal is considered the largest remaining area of native Cerrado vegetation within the city of Ituiutaba. It is a municipal protected area covering 37.5 hectares. This combination makes the natural character of the site tangible: alongside the vegetation, it has a designated protected-area status and a clearly stated area. Unlike the Galeria and MUSAI, which focus on city history and collections, the park brings a landscape perspective to the urban area.

A video from 2020 highlighted the maned wolf (raposa-do-campo), the capuchin monkey, and the green-barred woodpecker at Parque do Goiabal. These animal species add a fauna perspective to the Cerrado vegetation. Together, the vegetation, protected-area status, area, and selected species give nature its own focus in Ituiutaba alongside the city’s cultural sites.
