Hiking trails, a waterfall, and historic buildings sit alongside the annual Festival da Batata. The natural attractions come with their own visitor guidance; for the festival, the first half of October is the recurring period. This can help you decide whether your stay will be shaped primarily by a nature outing, regional architectural history, or a specific event date.

Hiking Trails and Waterfall

Parque Estadual Serra do Ouro Branco extends across two municipalities. In the municipality of Ouro Branco, there are hiking trails and long-distance routes that can be explored independently, including Trilha da Canela de Ema, Circuito das Águas, and Travessia Topo da Serra / Itatiaia. The park has no visitor facilities. It is recommended that you arrange your visit in advance; check with the park administration beforehand, as visitor guidance may change. Being able to explore independently does not mean visiting without prior arrangements: making an appointment remains a recommendation for your visit.

Cachoeira de Itatiaia is in the Itatiaia district of the municipality of Ouro Branco. The waterfall is 70 meters high and has natural pools that invite you to swim. It is easier to reach from above via a trail that starts at the edge of Estrada Real. Plan your visit during the day; a local guide is also recommended. The natural attractions therefore differ considerably in terms of planning: for the park, checking with the administration and arranging an appointment are important considerations, while at Cachoeira, visiting during the day and the recommendation to use a local guide are the main points.

Architecture and History

Fazenda Carreiras, also known as Casa de Tiradentes, is in the municipality of Ouro Branco at the edge of the former Estrada Real. It has been protected as a historic landmark by Iepha since September 2000. It is an example of 18th-century rural architecture in Minas Gerais and preserves the simplicity of the building style of that period. The dates refer to two different aspects: the 18th century places the architecture in context, while September 2000 marks the start of its historic landmark protection.

The churches also offer specific historical points of reference. The first mention of Matriz de Santo Antônio dates to 1717 and appears in a marriage certificate. In the municipality of Ouro Branco, Igreja de Santo Antônio has an altarpiece with carvings by Lourenço Rodrigues de Souza from 1792 and 1793. The church-related references thus range from an early mention in a document to an altarpiece with specific dates.

Festival da Batata

The Festival da Batata takes place every year in Ouro Branco during the first half of October. If the festival is the deciding factor for your trip, check the exact dates in advance. Its origins go back to the 1980s: the festival began during the potato cycle, when potatoes were abundant. For planning purposes, it is helpful to distinguish between the first half of October, which describes the recurring event period, and the 1980s, which mark the festival’s historical origins.
