Madrid: Architecture, Cultural Landscapes and Cocido Madrileño
Accommodation in Madrid
The Madrid region can be explored through a wide range of cultural and landscape themes: from the monastic complex of El Escorial and the university history of Alcalá de Henares to the gardens and avenues of Aranjuez. There are also hiking and cycling routes, mountain landscapes and a distinctive food culture. When planning a hotel stay, it is helpful to start by deciding which of these experiences you want to shape your trip. These differences provide a guide to what the region offers, without culture, nature or cuisine needing to define the entire stay.
Architectural History in El Escorial and Alcalá de Henares
The Monastery of El Escorial is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and was built in the 16th century on the orders of Philip II. The complex includes the monastery, church, royal palace, school, seminary and Royal Library. It thus brings together several buildings and institutions. Its austere, unadorned architecture in the Herrerian style is characteristic; this style influenced Spanish architecture for more than half a century. Those interested in architectural history can consider the commission, architectural style and various elements of a large complex together here.
In Alcalá de Henares, by contrast, the university tradition takes center stage. The city was purposefully designed to serve as the home of a university and became a model for university towns in Europe and the Americas. The university and historic district includes the Colegio Mayor de San Ildefonso and the Convent of San Bernardo. The urban fabric also tells this story: it includes the university’s layout and design, the medieval street network with Calle Mayor as its main thoroughfare, and the Baroque arcades. These elements have been preserved in exemplary fashion; most buildings dating from the university’s founding retain or have regained their original use. Alcalá can therefore be viewed through its urban structure and university, while El Escorial offers a different architectural focus with its monastic complex and Herrerian style.
Aranjuez: Cultural Landscape and Historic Gardens
The cultural landscape of Aranjuez covers 2,047.56 hectares in the south of the Community of Madrid. It includes historic kitchen gardens, tree-lined avenues and groves, the palace, ornamental gardens and an 18th-century historic center. The focus is therefore not limited to individual buildings: gardens, groves and agriculturally shaped areas are also part of the landscape. The ornamental gardens continue to attract visitors for recreation and cultural events. In contrast to El Escorial’s architectural ensemble, Aranjuez brings together a palace and historic center with an extensive cultural landscape.
Routes, Mountains and Nature Experiences
Rutas Verdes is a sustainable leisure program featuring hiking and cycling routes that can begin and end at a station on the public transport network. Route information includes distance, difficulty, the number of accessible stations and a route profile. Route guides are available to download in PDF and KML formats. Since individual routes can change and files may be updated, it is advisable to check the relevant route information before setting out.
The Sierra de Guadarrama offers opportunities for hiking, mountain excursions and outdoor activities. Trails pass through forests and mountain passes and lead to natural viewpoints. These landscapes differ in character from historic buildings and gardens: the focus here is on outdoor activities and varied landscapes. Hayedo de Montejo is recognized by UNESCO as a natural heritage site and is part of a joint nomination of the European Beech Forests. Visits are always led by environmental educators and are free of charge; check visitor information before your trip. The Tren de Felipe II offers another cultural and historical experience: this tourist excursion from Madrid recreates the historic journey to the Royal Site of El Escorial. Check operating dates in advance.
Cocido Madrileño and Regional Cuisine
Cuisine also offers a distinctive way to experience the region. Cocido madrileño is designated as intangible cultural heritage of the Community of Madrid and is a Bien de Interés Cultural. The dish is made with meat, vegetables, cured meats and chickpeas, and served in several separate courses known as “vuelcos.” The name refers to the particular sequence in which the ingredients are brought to the table. Regional variations have their own names and are associated with specific places: cocido pradeño in Villa del Prado, cocido corucho in Cenicientos, olla del segador in Navalcarnero, and cocido de taba in Chinchón and Valdemoro. Those interested in regional traditions can include this culinary specialty in their travel plans alongside the region’s architectural and landscape history.
